The final chapter of Mohamed Salah’s legendary Liverpool career may have reached an abrupt and bittersweet conclusion after the Egyptian forward was forced off against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Salah pulled up feeling his left hamstring in the second half of Liverpool’s 3-1 win. It casts serious doubt over whether he will feature in the remaining four matches of the season.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk did not shy away from the difficult questions in the aftermath, delivering a measured but candid take on his teammate’s situation. The Dutchman acknowledged the uncertainty that hangs over Salah’s final weeks at the club.

He admitted he simply does not know when, or if, the forward will return. “We will see him again this season? I hope so,” van Dijk said. “There will be a medical assessment and then that will determine what the issue is going to be.”

The captain continued, “I know he is doing everything in his power to be back on the pitch as soon as possible. If you get injured at this stage of the season, there are only two more home games left. It’s a combination of feelings that go through your mind when you go off.”

The Liverpool skipper maintained cautious optimism while being clear-eyed about the reality of the timeline. “Maybe he’s back next week, maybe not. I have no idea. He will get the send-off regardless. Knowing Mo, he is a quick healer with the right people around us, and let’s see.”

Egypt national team director Ibrahim Hassan confirmed a hamstring tear, with Salah requiring four weeks of treatment, a timeline that effectively rules him out for the remainder of the Premier League season, as per Goal.

The injury came in the 60th minute at Anfield, where Salah had already played his part with a delicate back-heel assist before pulling up sharply and holding his left hamstring. As per early reports, a possible absence of two weeks is expected, at the very least.

That would mean Salah misses Liverpool’s crunch match against Manchester United next weekend, as well as, Chelsea at Anfield. His visible emotion as he turned to applaud all four stands on his way off sparked immediate concern among fans.

Either way, as van Dijk said, Salah will get a farewell at Anfield against Brentford on the final day. Whether it comes with the Egyptian King playing a part in that game, remains to be seen. But either way, a legendary chapter at Anfield will come to an end this season.
