The Carabao Cup returned to action on Tuesday night with both Fulham and Brentford winning their respective games.

Meanwhile, Cardiff City got a win over Championship side, Wrexham, to book their place into the quarter-finals, as well.

The action packed League Cup night saw 10 goals in 3 games and a penalty shootout.

Brentford hit Grimsby Town for five as Fulham scrape through on penalties against Wycombe Wanderers

David Artell had praised Brentford ahead of their League Cup fixture, saying he expected the Bees to be a tougher opposition than Manchester United.

That definitely rang true for the Mariners who lost 5-0 at home with their superb run coming to an end.

Mathias Jensen and Keane Lewis-Potter scored four minutes apart to put Brentford 2-0 up in 26 minutes. Reiss Nelson added a third for the away side right before half-time to put them firmly in control.

The second half was more of the same from Keith Andrews’ men with Fabio Carvalho converting a penalty and Nathan Collins adding a fifth.

Meanwhile, Wycombe Wanderers took Fulham to penalties with Josh King cancelling out Cauley Woodrow’s early strike.

Unfortunately for the Chairboys, they could not take advantage of Fulham’s back-to-back penalty misses with Donnell McNeilly missing a golden chance to score a famous penalty.

As a result, Issa Diop converted his spot-kick, putting Fulham into the quarters.

In the only other Carabao Cup fixture of the night, Cardiff City beat Wrexham thanks to Will Fish’s 71st minute winner.

South Wales keeping the magic of the Carabao Cup alive

With Wycombe and Grimsby Town losing their matches, the two lowest ranked teams in the Carabao Cup are Cardiff City and Swansea City.

The Bluebirds, currently in League One, have already secured a spot in the quarter-finals but Championship side, Swansea host Manchester City at home. It will be a tough fixture but you can expect the home support to be loud as the Swans look to cause an upset.

If normalcy continues and Pep Guardiola’s side comes through, Cardiff City will be the only non-Premier League side left in the Carabao Cup.

But most fans will hope for a South Welsh derby in the quarter-finals, guaranteeing at least one side in the semi-finals will be from the Championship or below.
