Spanish duo leads race for Chelsea’s job: Blues to make appointment before World Cup
Last Updated on 12 May 2026
Chelsea are on the hunt for their fifth permanent manager since BlueCo’s takeover, and are determined to move swiftly. Having sacked Liam Rosenior in April, less than four months into a long-term contract, Chelsea work through a shortlist of candidates.
According to reports, the club hierarchy are keen to hire a more experienced coach than their last two appointments.
In fact, Chelsea want their new man in place before the middle of next month, ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola the names to watch for the Chelsea job
Two Spaniards dominate the conversation around the Chelsea job. Xabi Alonso has been without a club since being dismissed by Real Madrid in January, and sources indicate that Chelsea have already made contact with the 44-year-old.
The betting markets have tracked the growing momentum around him. His odds have been slashed from 33/1 just weeks ago to as short as 3/1, with 60% of placed bets currently backing him to get the role. But Alonso, despite being keen on a move to England, isn’t the only one.
Andoni Iraola remains firmly in the mix after confirming he will leave Bournemouth at the end of the season. The Spaniard has already held an in-person meeting with Chelsea representatives, underlining the seriousness of his candidacy.
Chelsea to deal Liverpool another blow after a big point at Anfield
The Blues got their first points in the Premier League since early March, with a draw at Anfield. It was enough to keep Liverpool sweating for a Champions League spot with two games to go. And now, Chelsea could snatch Xabi Alonso, who has been eternally linked to Liverpool.
According to the The Athletic, the Reds have no plans of letting Arne Slot go this season. While Slot is still set to undergo an end-of-season review, he is the favorite to be in charge next season. That comes as bad news to Anfield faithful who wanted Alonso to return.
In fact, Jamie Carragher, Alonso’s ex-teammate, believes that if the Spaniard goes to Stamford Bridge, it’s very unlikely that he’ll ever manage Liverpool. And, he’s not wrong. For Liverpool, it’s a major decision. Can they afford to let a manager that fits the club go to their arch-rivals?
