Ivan Toney faces serious legal trouble after England’s World Cup campaign ended. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the striker has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.

Consequently, the former Premier League star due before Westminster Magistrates’ Court next month.

The charge stems from an incident dating back to December.

The Ivan Toney incident at the nightclub

Police say the incident took place on December 6, at a nightclub on Wardour Street in Soho. Toney was charged on July 31, following months of investigation. He’s scheduled to appear in court on September 24.

According to witness accounts reported by The Sun, a fan approached the ex-Brentford star’s table that night. The man reportedly recognised him and attempted to grab a selfie. Witnesses claim he put his arms around Toney’s neck during that attempt.

Toney allegedly told the man repeatedly to back off. However, the situation escalated further, and witnesses say Toney headbutted him afterward. The alleged victim reportedly suffered bleeding from his nose following the confrontation.

Toney’s representative released a statement addressing the charge directly. He said Toney “acknowledges the charge” but remains “naturally shocked.” Furthermore, he stated Toney “looks forward to being given the opportunity to clear his name in court.”

How this complicates Ivan Toney’s return to England

This charge arrives at an awkward moment for Toney’s Premier League ambitions. Several clubs, including Everton and Tottenham, have shown genuine interest in re-signing him this summer. However, legal uncertainty rarely helps transfer negotiations progress smoothly.

Clubs typically avoid signing players facing criminal proceedings. Therefore, interested parties might adopt a wait-and-see approach until September’s hearing concludes. Given Toney’s big weekly wage in Saudi Arabia already complicates any move, this adds further hesitation.

Reputational risk matters too, especially for boardrooms wary of controversy. Even unproven allegations can affect a club’s public image significantly. Consequently, Toney’s path back to English football just became considerably harder to navigate.
