Only a year later, Henderson was back in Europe having signed with Ajax, and a shortwhile later, he was back in the Premier League with Brentford. He helped steady the ship at the G-Tech after Thomas Frank’s move to Tottenham.

His role as a leader has been so valuable that Thomas Tuchel saved him a spot in the England squad for the World Cup 2026. And, it seems that Henderson’s vital leadership is seen as a major attribute from Xabi Alonso, who has received the greenlight to bring him to Chelsea.

The move is surprising on the surface, but Alonso wanted to reunite with Granit Xhaka, reportedly. It’s obvious that the Spaniard wants more experience in the Blues squad and has now turned to Jordan Henderson.

However, Henderson is not the only veteran being chased by Xabi. Chelsea are also pursuing Danny Welbeck from Brighton. He scored 13 Premier League goals last season, comfortably his best return. Alonso reportedly admires his leadership just as much as his finishing.

Additionally, Chelsea have also registered interest in free agent John Stones. Together, these moves signal a clear shift in transfer strategy. Instead of chasing pure potential, Chelsea now blend youth with proven winners.
