Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has become the latest high-profile football figure to be targeted by burglars.

Roberto Martinez saw his luxury Cascais home raided while he and wife Beth were out. The criminals made off with designer watches and jewellery reportedly worth more than half a million pounds.

Police believe the break-in was carried out by a gang who knew the couple would be away for several hours.

The gang is thought to have forced open a window of Roberto Martinez’s luxury home before conducting a thorough search of the property, located in the upmarket town of Cascais, west of Lisbon.

Portuguese broadcaster SIC has valued the stolen goods at £87,000. However, respected outlet Correio da Manha reports Martinez and his wife estimate the loss at closer to £700,000.

Forensic experts have already combed the home for clues, while Portuguese police focus their investigation on a foreign gang specialising in high-end property heists.

Martinez is not the first high-profile football figure to be at the end of a robbery in Portugal. In 2021, Nicolas Otamendi, the former Manchester City centerback fell victim of a robbery.

Roberto Martinez’s first stint in England came with Swansea City in 2007. His possession-based style of play was appreciated by many pundits and led to his appointment at Wigan Athletic, then in the Premier League.

During his time with Wigan, Martinez helped them win the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

It was a remarkable achievement with the Latics trumping Manchester City in the final.

Only a few days later, though, Wigan were relegated for the first time since returning in 2005.

That FA Cup success was enough to convince Everton to take a chance on the Portuguese manager, who completed his move to Merseyside two weeks after Wigan’s relegation.

With Everton, Martinez finished fifth in his first season, replacing David Moyes but was sacked after mixed results in subsequent campaigns.

Since his departure from the Premier League, the 52-year-old has made a name for himself on the international stage. Martinez finished third in the World Cup with Belgium. He also guided his national side, Portugal, to 2025 UEFA Nations League victory.
