Shake-up continues at Anfield with Michael Edwards leaving role as CEO of Football for Liverpool
Last Updated on 10 July 2026
Liverpool face another major change behind the scenes after Michael Edwards decided to leave his role with Fenway Sports Group.
The surprise development arrives during an already uncertain summer, with Richard Hughes expected to depart and Andoni Iraola only beginning his new chapter at Anfield.
Consequently, attention has now shifted towards who will steer Liverpool’s football operations through the next phase after some big exits.
Why Michael Edwards is leaving Liverpool as another major exit looms
Michael Edwards returned to Liverpool to oversee football operations across Fenway Sports Group. However, that project has now reached an unexpected conclusion. Reports suggest Edwards grew frustrated with the lack of progress on FSG’s proposed multi-club model.
He viewed that strategy as central to Liverpool’s long-term recruitment plans. Nevertheless, the project failed to advance as quickly as expected. Meanwhile, Liverpool could lose director Richard Hughes with Al-Hilal interested & he could leave after current transfer window.
Despite that uncertainty, Hughes recently helped appoint Andoni Iraola as Liverpool’s new head coach. Therefore, the Spaniard starts work while significant changes continue all around him.
Mike Gordon takes charge as Liverpool look for stability
Liverpool do not expect Edwards’ departure to trigger a complete rebuild of the club’s structure. Instead, FSG president Mike Gordon will assume day-to-day responsibility for football operations. Gordon knows Liverpool’s internal processes better than almost anyone.
As a result, FSG believes the existing recruitment system, data department and football philosophy will continue without major disruption. Even so, the timing creates fresh questions. Iraola must settle into a demanding job while senior executives change around him.
Furthermore, Hughes’ expected exit could leave another important vacancy before the season fully begins. Liverpool insist the foundations remain strong. Yet supporters will watch closely to see whether stability returns quickly or whether another period of transition awaits.
