The Premier League never stops delivering bang after bang. Liverpool and Arne Slot have parted ways with immediate effect, bringing a stunning end to the Dutchman’s time at Anfield.

The decision came following an end-of-season review with Slot having been unable to mount a defence of the Premier League title he won in his debut campaign, a collapse few could have predicted just twelve months ago.

And, just like that, Anfield’s dugout is empty, once again.

Liverpool announce Arne Slot’s departure

Arne Slot arrived at Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement in 2024 and got off to the perfect start, winning the Premier League title at the first time of asking. The goodwill that generated was expected to buy him time, and for much of the season it did.

A £450m transfer spend last summer brought in major signings, yet the results simply never came, with the Reds enduring a miserable campaign from near the very start. It was a matter of when not if. And, eventually, the hierarchy at Anfield pulled the trigger.

Liverpool lost 12 times in the Premier League alone and conceded 78 goals across all competitions, finishing a distant fifth. Not to mention, 20 total defeats in all competitions. The mood inside the dressing room appeared to turn decisively against the manager.

Large portions of the squad publicly engaging with Mohamed Salah’s social media posts criticising Slot and the falling standards at the club. By the end, there was little appetite, from players, fans or the hierarchy, to continue.

Andoni Iraola the early favourite to take the helm

Fabrizio Romano’s bombshell report also named Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola as the clear favourite to take over at Anfield. The appointment would make considerable sense on several levels.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes was the driving force behind bringing Iraola to Bournemouth. It is understood that he is eager to reunited with the Spaniard.

Renowned for an aggressive, high-tempo style, Iraola has got the best out of several players during his time on the south coast. He has already passed up the chance to join AC Milan and it’s expected that he will be Liverpool coach heading into next season.
