Hugo Ekitike’s funny comment rubs salt in Liverpool fan’s wounds
Last Updated on 30 January 2026
Liverpool’s season has been defined by moments that feel improvised, unscripted, and occasionally tongue-in-cheek. When pressure hits, solutions have come from unexpected places, and sometimes, from unexpected people.
A thumping European night against Qarabag at Anfield produced more than just goals and highlights. It also sparked a brief moment online that caught the attention of Liverpool fans, rival supporters, and transfer-watchers alike.
It was only a single word, posted by Hugo Ekitike, casually. But in a season shaped by near-misses in the market and constant speculation, it was enough to reopen a conversation many thought had already moved on.
Hugo Ekitike’s “Guehi” comment that reignited old transfer talk
Following Liverpool’s emphatic 6-0 Champions League victory, Hugo Ekitike joined in the post-match celebrations on social media but his comment stood out. Under Ryan Gravenberch’s Instagram post, the French forward wrote: “Guehi!!”
The remark was clearly playful, referencing Ryan Gravenberch’s emergency shift at centre-back during the rout. With Liverpool stretched defensively and forced into creative solutions, Gravenberch’s performance drew praise.
Ekitike’s comment framed it as Liverpool having “found their own Guehi.” Yet the joke landed because of context. Guehi had been one of Liverpool’s most talked-about defensive targets in recent windows, with negotiations falling apart late and Guehi moving to Manchester City.
‘I made my choice’, Ekitike on failed Newcastle move ahead of clash against the Magpies
Hugo Ekitike has confirmed that Newcastle United came close to signing him in the summer, but insists his mind was already made up long before the move collapsed.
Speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside, the 23-year-old admitted discussions were advanced, yet clear about where his future lay. Liverpool face Newcastle United at Anfield on Saturday and unsurprisingly the Frenchman has come under the spotlight.
“Obviously, we were close [to a move], but I made my choice,” Ekitike said. “I knew where I wanted to come and I’m where I wanted to come.” For the striker, there was no lingering doubt, only a firm belief that Anfield was the right destination.
Ekitike expects a hostile reception from visiting supporters but couldn’t be less concerned. “I don’t care, I play for Liverpool and I have my fans here,” he said, brushing off the prospect of jeers. “I just want to play and that’s the most important thing.”
