Scott Parker has become the latest Premier League manager to leave his post this season, as Burnley confirmed his departure following their relegation from the top flight.

It is a familiar story for Parker, a manager who has proven himself a serial winner in the Championship but has yet to show he can cut it at the highest level.

The Clarets brought him in as manager in 2024 to arrest the slide after Vincent Kompany. Parker did a great job with Burnley in the Championship post-relegation but another season in the Premier League will instead go down as another painful chapter for the 45-year-old.

Once relegation was mathematically confirmed by last week’s home defeat to Manchester City, it was only a matter of time. Burnley’s hierarchy entered into discussions with Parker regarding his future, talks that ended with the former England international’s exit.

It is a bitterly disappointing conclusion to what had been a promising project at Turf Moor. A solitary win since October kept Burnley in 19th place for 22 weeks. Ultimately, there was no way back from such a damaging run.

Burnley return to the Championship, cementing their status as a yo-yo club in every sense of the word. The Clarets go straight back down, joining Wolves in the drop, with a third team yet to be confirmed.

For Parker, it is a third successive failure to survive in the Premier League as a manager. He’s another manager who could learn from Daniel Farke, having suffered relegations with Fulham and Bournemouth.

Eleven and counting: A season of managerial change in the Premier League

Parker’s exit makes him the eleventh Premier League manager to depart this season. It has been an extraordinary year of instability in the dugout. The exodus began with Nottingham Forest sacking Nuno Espirito Santo in early September, as per The Mag.

Then, West Ham let Graham Potter leave, while Forest sacked Ange Postecoglou only a few weeks after Nuno in mid-October. Vitor Pereira was relieved of his duties at the Molineux in November. And, the New Years brought Enzo Maresca and Ruben Amorim’s departures.

Tottenham, in trouble, sacked Thomas Frank in February and only a day later Forest got rid of their third manager in the season, Sean Dyche. Igor Tudor, Thomas Frank’s replacement at Spurs, also left before seeing April.

Since then, Liam Rosenior has been sacked by Chelsea and now Scott Parker joins the list. That number is already set to increase to 13 with Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner leaving at the end of the season. It could rise to 14 depending on Michael Carrick’s situation at Old Trafford.
