Emerse Fae could barely contain his laughter. After Ivory Coast edged Ecuador 1-0 in Philadelphia on Sunday, journalists asked the Elephants’ head coach about his star winger’s transfer future.

His answer said everything. “When we were in France, during the preparation, journalists told me he was about to sign with PSG,” Fae smiled. “Here, they tell me he’s about to sign with Liverpool!”

Europe, it seems, simply cannot agree on who gets Yan Diomande. What everyone does agree on, though, is that this 19-year-old is lighting up the World Cup.

Yan Diomande torments Ecuador’s star-studded defense

Against one of the most stubborn defenses in South American football, Diomande was electric. The coveted winger touched the ball more than any of his teammates throughout the night. Furthermore, he completed four dribbles, a figure only Amad Diallo matched, and consistently put Piero Hincapie, Arsenal’s Champions League finalist, under relentless pressure.

Fae did not hide his admiration afterward. “Yan, what can I say? I can’t put it into words,” he told reporters. “He’s very talented, but beyond the talent, he’s very young and he’ll improve.” He then added: “It’s easy to work with someone like Yan. He can give you the victory and was a real challenge for Hincapie, a Champions League finalist.”

Indeed, Hincapie is no ordinary full-back. He’s started Champions League finals and spent the season defending against Europe’s finest. Yet Diomande repeatedly left him chasing shadows.

The winger’s delivery also nearly unlocked Ecuador before half-time, with Elye Wahi rattling the crossbar from his cross. After all he was on the list of our stars to watch.

Diomande started on the right and then shifted across to the left, and he caused problems from both channels. For all that, Fae insists the transfer noise must wait. “For now, he will focus on the World Cup, and then afterwards, he can think about the rest of his career.”

Meanwhile, Leipzig remain reluctant to sell. However, with PSG and Liverpool both circling, and Diomande’s valuation sitting around €90 million, that resolve faces a serious test once this tournament concludes.

Amad seals it and the Elephants can go very deep

Yet beyond the Diomande show, Ivory Coast demonstrated something equally important on Sunday: resilience. Ecuador struck the woodwork twice in the first half through John Yeboah and Alan Minda, and Enner Valencia also hit the bar after the restart.

Consequently, a lesser side might have buckled. Instead, Fae’s tactical adjustments gradually turned the tide, and the substitute proved decisive. Amad Diallo, surprisingly left out of the starting XI, entered the fray just after the hour mark and immediately changed the game.

Then, in the 90th minute, Wilfried Singo drove forward from deep and cut the ball back perfectly. Amad, cool and precise, sidefooted it into the bottom corner beyond Hernan Galindez.

The strike ended Ecuador’s 19-game unbeaten run and delivered Ivory Coast their first World Cup win in 12 years. Moreover, the manner of victory suggests this squad has layers. Diomande starts and dominates. Amad comes off the bench and wins it.

Fae’s attacking options run deep, and the group stage gives them Germany next before a likely straightforward tie with Curacao. The 2023 AFCON champions have the quality to navigate that. And if Diomande continues performing like this, they have the X-factor to go much further.
