Goals from goalkeepers are football’s ultimate plot twist. Ninety minutes of structure, patterns, and roles get ripped up in an instant when the one player never expected to score suddenly appears in the opposition box.

Or when he launches the ball from his own area and watches chaos unfold. The Premier League has only witnessed this rare moment a handful of times. Some were freak acts of nature. Others were last-ditch acts of desperation.

Here are the only six goalkeepers to ever score in Premier League history in true unforgettable fashion.

6 – Asmir Begovic (Stoke City) vs Southampton | November 2, 2013

The longest goal in competitive football history belongs to a goalkeeper and it came almost by accident.

Asmir Begovic launched a routine clearance just 13 seconds into the match, but the wind had other ideas. The ball bounced brutally over Artur Boruc and into the net from 91.9 metres, earning a Guinness World Record.

Begovic, for what it’s worth, barely celebrated, knowing full well how cruel the goal was. Historic? Absolutely. Deliberate? Not really.

5 – Tim Howard (Everton) vs Bolton Wanderers | January 4, 2012

Another goal written by the elements.

Tim Howard sent a long clearance downfield at Goodison Park, only for ferocious wind to turn it into something sinister. One bounce, total deception, goal.

Howard famously refused to celebrate like Begovic, later calling it “cruel”. A moment of professional empathy that has, over the years, made the goal even more memorable.

4 – Paul Robinson (Tottenham Hotspur) vs Watford | March 17, 2007

This one was intentional. Sort of.

Paul Robinson struck a free-kick from inside his own half, and while it wasn’t meant as a shot, the bounce over Ben Foster was perfect.

Crucially, it actually mattered. Tottenham would go on to win 3–1, making Robinson the first goalkeeper in the Premier League to score from distance and help secure victory.

3 – Peter Schmeichel (Aston Villa) vs Everton | October 20, 2001

The first ever goalkeeper to score a goal in the Premier League was, fittingly, Peter Schmeichel.

He broke new ground by becoming the first goalkeeper to score in Premier League history. Trailing late, the Great Dane charged forward for a corner and volleyed home like a seasoned striker.

Villa still lost, but football history was made and goalkeepers everywhere were officially allowed to dream.

2 – Brad Friedel (Blackburn Rovers) vs Charlton Athletic | February 21, 2004

Possibly the most heartbreaking goal on the list.

Brad Friedel stayed up for a late corner and stabbed home an equaliser in the 89th minute. Euphoria in the stands, everyone was surprised. Unfortunately, the thrill only lasted seconds. Charlton scored immediately from the restart.

A goalkeeper’s goal…in a losing cause. Brutal, unforgettable, and painfully Premier League.

1 – Alisson Becker (Liverpool) vs West Bromwich Albion | May 16, 2021

This wasn’t a novelty. This was destiny.

With Liverpool’s Champions League hopes hanging by a thread, Alisson Becker sprinted forward in the 95th minute and met a corner with a flawless glancing header into the far corner.

He became the only goalkeeper in Premier League history to score a winning goal and arguably the most important header Liverpool have scored in the modern era.
