Ibrahima Konate’s statement performance v Sunderland reignites contract chatter
Last Updated on 12 February 2026
Ibrahima Konate delivered a performance that did more than just secure three points for Liverpool against Sunderland, it served as a timely reminder of his growing importance at Anfield.
The French defender was dominant from first whistle to last. He produced a display that underlined his authority amidst a difficult campaign with Liverpool.
With discussions over Konate’s long-term future simmering in the background, the timing could hardly have been more significant.
Ibrahima Konate dominates at the Stadium of Light in important Liverpool win
For the majority of the 2025/26 season, Konate has been very hot and cold. The season began with a number of individual errors and lapses in concentration for the Frenchman.
It was not all bad, though. The 26-year-old bounced back from a rough spell to produce some big displays. Then, he was dealt a personal blow as his father passed away and he missed a few games for Liverpool.
Since his return, Konate’s been impeccable. He delivered a strong performance against Newcastle, even scoring on his emotional return but he was at his best against Sunderland where another fan-favorite was snubbed by Arne Slot.
Konate, however, came up against the physical Brian Brobbey and kept him quiet for 90 minutes.
His key interventions set the tone for the Reds at the Stadium of Light and head coach, Arne Slot, was delighted with his return to form.
Renewed optimism over contract talks; Captain van Dijk wants ‘world class’ Konate to stay
Virgil van Dijk was quick to praise his centre-back partner after his terrific performance, via BBC Sport.
“Obviously I want him (Konate) to stay,” said Van Dijk. “He’s an important figure on the pitch. That’s what everyone sees but off the pitch as well, he’s one of the leaders. He’s outstanding and in my eyes, a world-class centre back.”
Meanwhile, James Pearce of The Athletic, explained the Reds view the Konate contract situation in the same vein as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk from the season before. They are quietly confident of getting Konate to extend beyond the summer.
This is fantastic news for Liverpool, who strengthened their options at centre-back with the signing of Jeremy Jacquet for £60 million from Rennes. Jacquet will join Liverpool at the end of the season, after injuring himself during a Ligue 1 game.

They also signed a trio of young centre-backs for the academy, with the likes of Ifeanyi Ndukwe, Mor Talla Ndiaye, and Noah Adekoya joining. Before that, they had signed Giovanni Leoni from Parma, who they lost to an ACL injury.
For all these signings, keeping a hold of Konate would represent a major coup for Liverpool. The Frenchman has been excellent at Anfield, and at his best, he’s unplayable.
