Another blow for Liverpool: Defender’s season could be over in concerning injury update
Last Updated on 9 February 2026
Liverpool’s defensive plans have taken another worrying turn, with fresh injury concerns emerging months before a new arrival has even set foot at Anfield. What was meant to be a smooth transition into the summer is now clouded by uncertainty.
Jeremy Jacquet, a highly rated centre-back was signed from Rennes in a £60million deal. But he is now facing a potentially season-ending setback during his time in France.
With Liverpool already bruised by defensive misfortune this campaign, the timing could hardly be worse. Even though, Jacquet was not supposed to join up with Liverpool’s squad this season.
Surgery fears after Jeremy Jacquet forced off in Ligue 1 defeat
Jacquet was injured during Rennes’ 3–1 defeat to Lens on Saturday, forced off midway through the second half after damaging his shoulder. The 20-year-old had been a near ever-present this season, playing every available minute when not suspended.
Rennes boss Habib Beye confirmed the severity of the issue after the match. He admitted the club fears the injury is serious, before being let go by the club. French outlet L’Equipe has since reported that surgery is now a strong possibility, a scenario sidelining Jacquet for weeks.
The setback comes at a brutal moment for Rennes, who have now lost four consecutive matches across league and cup, conceding 12 goals in the process. Losing their defensive linchpin only deepens a crisis that threatens to derail their European ambitions.
Liverpool watch closely as defensive bad luck piles up
Liverpool are closely monitoring Jacquet’s situation, already all too familiar with how quickly promising defensive plans can unravel. Last summer’s young signing Giovanni Leoni was ruled out for the season after suffering an ACL injury on his Reds debut in September.
Jacquet had chosen to remain with Rennes for the rest of the campaign rather than move to Merseyside immediately. He was hoping to help guide the club into European qualification. That decision now looks unfortunate, with his development and momentum suddenly on hold.
While Liverpool’s long-term belief in Jacquet remains unchanged, the immediate concern is clear. Another defensive injury, another rehabilitation battle, and another reminder that the road to Anfield has become an unexpectedly difficult one.
