Pressure mounts on Mikel Arteta as touchline tensions spill beyond the Emirates Stadium
Last Updated on 25 February 2026
For the first time in a while, Mikel Arteta looks like a manager feeling the heat. Arsenal’s stuttering results have coincided with a resurgent Manchester City.
This has reopened familiar questions about whether the Gunners can truly go the distance in a title race. For Arteta, the pressure is no longer confined to post-match press conferences or tactical debates. It is beginning to seep into the margins of Arteta’s public persona.
An uncomfortable off-field exchange after Arsenal’s FA Cup win over Wigan has now added another layer to the narrative: a coach under scrutiny, and perhaps starting to show it.
Mikel Arteta exits Emirates snubbing a pleading fan’s request
A video emerged on social media of Mikel Arteta exiting the Emirates Stadium after the FA Cup win over Wigan Athletic. After guiding his side through the tie, the Arsenal manager attempted to leave the Emirates quietly with his family.

However, as he navigated the surrounding streets, he was recognised by supporters while sitting in his car. Traffic congestion meant Arteta was left stationary for longer than expected, creating an opportunity for fans to approach his vehicle.
One supporter, in particular, repeatedly asked the Spaniard to sign a shirt, insisting the autograph was intended for his son. Arteta made it clear through his body language that he did not intend to engage.
He kept his window up and refrained from responding, even as the requests continued. What might have been a routine post-match departure turned into an uncomfortable, one-sided exchange, with the fan ultimately walking away without the signature he sought.
On the surface, it was a minor incident. But in a climate where pressure is mounting and margins are thin, even small moments can take on greater significance, especially when the cameras are always watching. And, after he has had tough PR regarding the Partey situation.
Fanbase divided as Arteta incident sparks debate
The episode has since triggered a lively debate among Arsenal supporters. In fact, opinion is sharply split over whether Arteta’s response was understandable or unbecoming of a club figurehead. For some fans, the optics were poor.
A manager seen ignoring a request from someone claiming to be acting on behalf of his child. Critics argue such moments are part of the responsibility that comes with leading a club of Arsenal’s stature, especially at a time when goodwill feels particularly valuable.
Others, however, have rallied firmly behind Arteta. They point out that the encounter took place late in the evening, away from official club duties, and while he was attempting to leave with his family.
From that perspective, Arteta was under no obligation to engage. Particularly in a situation where stopping could have encouraged further crowding around his vehicle.
