Galatasaray took an early lead when Mario Lemina scored from close range to give the Turkish side a lead in the seventh minute. Despite being an end-to-end game, Galatasaray hung on against Liverpool to win 1-0.

Liverpool’s defeat in Turkey was their 13th of the current campaign and it has put Arne Slot under immense pressure, once again. While the Reds remain hopeful of overturning the Champions League deficit at home, next week, it makes for an extremely worrying situation.

While the Dutch manager has pointed the finger at his players in his post-match, his captain, Virgil van Dijk has different opinions with Jamie Carragher also firing a warning at Slot.

Virgil van Dijk’s pointed response to Galatasaray loss a firm answer to Arne Slot’s criticism

Liverpool have gone through worse phases in their on-going campaign than the one they find themselves in, currently. However, for the first time, in what has been a difficult season, Arne Slot has appeared to crack, a tiny bit, under the mounting pressure.

Speaking in his post-match conference, Slot said, “We had three or four great moments, the biggest moment when Florian (Wirtz) came across almost an open goal but he couldn’t finish that ball.”

While the Dutchman bemoaned the missed chances, he also criticized his team’s inability to land the killer blow.

“Sometimes, we get our chances and it comes across like we think we’ll get 10 more. We weren’t able to score and like last time, with their first attack it led to a corner and you have to give credit to the way when they get a chance they play it like it’s the last chance of their lives.”

Contrary to Slot’s comments about Liverpool’s missed chances, their captain sang a different tone via Mirror.

“We started the game in Istanbul well, maybe should have scored and that changes the momentum of the game and obviously the atmosphere in the stadium, but we didn’t. I don’t want to blame anything but we made some individual mistakes.”

Van Dijk’s omission of any particular names in his criticism are an obvious indication of how Slot’s frustrations got the better of him after another narrow defeat.

‘Managers carry the can’: Jamie Carragher joins the Arne Slot onslaught

Jamie Carragher, after Steven Gerrard, has weighed in on the growing criticism surrounding Arne Slot, insisting that regardless of circumstances, it is always the manager who ultimately takes responsibility.

Speaking after Liverpool’s disappointing performance, Carragher acknowledged that issues can stem from several areas, from recruitment to player form, but stressed that football has always placed the burden on the man in the dugout.

“Managers carry the can,” Carragher said, pointing out that even when deeper structural problems exist within a club, it is the head coach who faces the immediate pressure when results begin to slide.

Carragher added, “This team is a million miles off where it was supposed to be this season which was that we’d be talking about them in the same light the way we speak about Bayern Munich. That was the whole point of Liverpool spending over £400million in the summer.”

Liverpool currently sit sixth, a spot outside the Champions League places. Their chances of winning silverware have also been dealt a blow with a defeat in Istanbul while facing a stern test against Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
