Liverpool smashed six past Azerbaijani side, Qarabag FK, in the Champions League to finish third in the group stage and seal automatic qualification.

Despite a convincing win, Arne Slot’s comments in the pre and post-match press conferences have put him in hot water with Liverpool fans. It’s got to a point where Steven Gerrard launched a scathing attack at the Dutchman for his comments.

Slot’s obsession with Liverpool’s defeat to PSG in the 2025 Champions League has gone to the next level. Here’s all that has been said and dissected.

Arne Slot delivers reality check to Liverpool fans; doubles down on comments re: PSG loss

A 6-0 win over Qarabag did not lighten the mood in the post-match press conference at Anfield. Arne Slot was asked about Liverpool’s direct qualification and the Dutchman served up a reality check for fans demanding more.

This jibe at Liverpool’s recent European adventures has not gone down too well with the Anfield faithful. The Reds have been poor, this season, after winning the Premier League, last season, sitting 14 points behind league-leaders Arsenal.

Slot, meanwhile, has been brutal in his analysis. The 47-year-old pointed out that he understands the expectations but was quick to explain how he delivered one of the only two Premier League titles the Anfield club had won in “thirty years”.

It remains to be seen why Slot has chosen to fight fire with fire given the pressure on him. But, it’s obvious that the pressure is getting to the Dutchman. He also doubled down on his comments about how he won the league in 2025 due to the loss to PSG in Champions League.

“Yesterday I used the word ‘might’…might, might but not everyone is listening about it. Losing to PSG might have helped us.”

‘They had the league wrapped up’ – Steven Gerrard not buying Slot’s excuses

As expected, Slot came under a lot of pressure from Liverpool fans for saying that the only reason they won the league was because of their loss to PSG in the Champions League.

Steven Gerrard shared the same opinion and responded to Slot during the Champions League show on TNT Sports.

“In my opinion, they had the league wrapped up by that point. To sort of say that helped them is a body blow for the fans really, because the fans have been on the journey, they pay good money to follow the team in the Champions League games.”

The Reds legend added that the frustration around Liverpool’s recent form has been difficult to take.

“I can understand the fans being frustrated on the back of that interview for the simple reason is they were 15 points clear. The frustration and the emotion of going out of the Champions League, for a player or a fan, it hurts. It kills you.”
