Manchester United’s chaotic 4-4 draw against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Monday night ended in frustration, with captain Bruno Fernandes appearing to be involved in a heated exchange with senior teammates Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez at the final whistle.

In what is already being dubbed one of the games of the season, United surrendered the lead three separate times in a contest defined by attacking brilliance and defensive calamity.

Ruben Amorim’s side looked set for victory after Fernandes’ stunning free-kick and Matheus Cunha’s finish put them 4-3 ahead late on, but substitute Junior Kroupi snatched an 84th-minute equaliser for the Cherries to cap an eight-goal thriller.

The result leaves United sixth in the Premier League table, but the post-match scenes suggested the dropped points have caused significant friction within the squad.

Fernandes left fuming at teammates

As the full-time whistle blew, the Old Trafford crowd was left stunned, but the real drama was unfolding on the pitch. Video footage circulated on social media showed a visibly furious Bruno Fernandes gesticulating wildly at his defensive unit.

The Portuguese international was spotted in an animated discussion with Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, appearing to take issue with the manner of the goals conceded. Martinez, who had been introduced as a substitute to try and shore up the defence, was seen attempting to calm his captain down, while Casemiro, who had scored earlier in the match, engaged in a frank exchange of views with the playmaker.

Manchester Evening News reporter Steven Railston noted the incident, posting on X: “Bruno Fernandes absolutely furious following the final whistle at Old Trafford. Visibly angry as some of his team-mates tried to approach him.”

The frustration is understandable given the nature of the defensive errors. United’s backline, which included a mix of youth and experience with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven featuring alongside Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot, looked vulnerable throughout.

The equaliser from Kroupi, which saw the Bournemouth forward drift into the box unmarked, appeared to be the breaking point for Fernandes, whose match-winning efforts were undone by lapses at the back.

Bruno Fernandes has been on great form

Despite the mixed results for the club, Bruno Fernandes has been a beacon of consistency for Manchester United this season. His second-half free-kick, which curled perfectly into the top corner to make it 3-3, was a reminder of his enduring quality.

The goal takes his tally for the 2025/26 campaign to an impressive level, with the captain now sitting on 5 goals and 7 assists in just 17 Premier League appearances.

While the team struggles to find defensive stability under Amorim, Fernandes has continued to deliver in the final third.

He has now registered a goal or an assist in consecutive matches and remains the creative heartbeat of the side.

However, as Monday night’s outburst demonstrated, his individual brilliance is increasingly being overshadowed by the team’s collective inability to close out matches.

With critical fixtures against Aston Villa and Newcastle United approaching, Amorim will need to ensure that this show of passion translates into a reaction on the pitch rather than a dressing room divide.
