In 2012, Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois were two of Belgium’s brightest exports, both contracted to Chelsea but developing elsewhere. One in Germany, one in Madrid, careers rising in parallel.

Off the pitch, however, a personal storyline was unfolding that would fracture more than just a friendship. What began as a relationship between De Bruyne and Caroline Lijnen would spiral into one of football’s most talked-about dressing-room rifts.

For years, the story lived in whispers and tabloid headlines. But like most football feuds, the truth was more layered than the villain-hero narrative first presented.

Madrid, 2012: The betrayal that broke the bro-code

While Courtois was starring on loan at Atletico Madrid from Chelsea, Caroline Lijnen travelled to the Spanish capital. During that visit, she and Courtois became intimate, a revelation that later exploded across Belgian media.

To the outside world, the script was simple: teammate crosses the line, trust is shattered. In football culture, where dressing-room loyalty is sacred, Courtois was quickly cast as the antagonist.

The tension reportedly grew so severe that, according to De Bruyne’s autobiography Keep It Simple, Belgium’s national team management intervened. The coach allegedly asked De Bruyne whether he wanted Courtois removed from the squad. He declined.

In that moment, professionalism overrode emotion. De Bruyne acknowledged the personal breach but refused to let it dismantle the team’s competitive core.

Caroline Lijnen’s version: A complicated truth

The narrative shifted in late 2014 when Caroline Lijnen broke her silence. In an interview with Belgian magazine Story via Tribuna, she challenged the clean-cut framing of betrayal.

According to Lijnen, her relationship with De Bruyne had already fractured. She claimed the Manchester City legend had cheated on her earlier that year with one of her close friends. This was a revelation that reframed the Madrid episode as retaliation rather than impulse.

Her most striking quote lingered: Courtois had given her “what I had not received during a three-year relationship with Kevin.”

Suddenly, the feud was no longer a straight line. It became a triangle, layered with hurt, ego and unresolved resentment.

Time, success and distance softened the edges. De Bruyne evolved into a generational midfielder at Manchester City. Courtois cemented himself as one of Europe’s elite goalkeepers at Real Madrid. But for Caroline, she has been framed as a “cheater” by football fans.
