Chelsea are in turmoil after the club suspended vice-captain Enzo Fernandez for two matches, with the Argentine’s future at Stamford Bridge now seriously in doubt following a chaotic international break.

The midfielder openly expressed admiration for Real Madrid during the break. It has fuelled speculation over a summer exit and manager Liam Rosenior has now confirmed a formal sanction has been handed down.

It comes at the worst possible moment for a Chelsea side sitting sixth. They are still battling on two fronts with an FA Cup tie against Port Vale and Manchester City next weekend.

Enzo Fernandez handed two-game ban after flirting with Real Madrid

Liam Rosenior confirmed the punishment at his pre-match press conference. He stopped short of publicly condemning his player but made clear a line had been crossed.

“A line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build.” He said, adding that despite his disappointment, he had no bad words for Fernandez as a person.

Fernandez had initially stoked the fire when he openly expressed his admiration for Madrid in an interview. He said he could see himself living there, which is a damaging admission for a player already being linked with a summer move to the Spanish capital.

Teammate Marc Cucurella compounded the chaos by echoing similar sentiments, however he escaped a ban. This turns what was already a difficult week into a full-blown PR crisis for the west Londoners.

Can Chelsea afford to lose Enzo Fernandez and can they stop it happening?

The suspension is damaging enough on its own, but the bigger concern for Chelsea fans is what comes next. As per talkSPORT, Fernandez remains open to joining Real Madrid in the summer, though he has not formally informed the club of a desire to leave.

Rosenior refused to be drawn on his vice-captain’s future, insisting that was not his place to speak on. That is a telling non-denial from a manager who needs his most expensive player focused with Chelsea’s top-five hopes still hanging by a thread.

It also does not reflect kindly on Chelsea’s project under BlueCo. Fans will undeniably question the club’s ambition if the Blues sell their best players. Especially, when they have been buying to sell, although that hasn’t worked out based on the latest financial statements.
