BREAKING: Enzo Maresca departs Chelsea; Blues weighing up move for former Hull City star
Last Updated on 1 January 2026
Enzo Maresca’s comments in November and public frustration at not being backed with a defensive signing has resulted in a complete breakdown at Chelsea.
Things took a turn for the worst when Chelsea drew their final game of the 2025 calendar year. Maresca was also not in attendance for his post-match press conference.
Yesterday, it was reported by Football Paparazzi that the Italian was considering resigning from his role. And, the story has only escalated since.
Enzo Maresca resigns from role as head coach at Chelsea after fallout
It has been officially confirmed that Enzo Maresca has resigned from his role as head coach at Chelsea.
Overnight, it became evident that the Chelsea hierarchy were not concerned with results. Maresca was not going to be given a timeframe to turn the results around, contrary to some reports.
The problem at hand was his relationship with the Chelsea hierarchy, and as per many, with co-owner, Behdad Eghbali, in particular. As a result, Maresca has decided to step down.
Those with inside knowledge believe that speculation linking the Italian with Manchester City was also one of the reasons. While his public outcry at a failure to address Levi Colwill’s long-term injury and a switch of agents became too much for Chelsea to ignore.
Maresca becomes the sixth manager to depart Chelsea since Roman Abramovic’s exit.
Liam Rosenior among options being considered as Enzo Maresca’s replacement
The Chelsea hierarchy has already singled out Liam Rosenior as a potential replacement for Maresca.

Rosenior is currently the manager at Strasbourg, also owned by BlueCo, the owners of Chelsea. It should be a straightforward deal to do if they decide to pull the trigger on the former Hull City player.
On the other hand, Oliver Glasner has been ruled out of contention. While some among the Chelsea hierarchy are also considering a move for Roberto De Zerbi.
