A potentially explosive Premier League transfer is beginning to take shape, with reports suggesting Nottingham Forest have entered the race to sign Jean-Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace.

The proposed move carries serious implications both on and off the pitch. Mateta has been widely tipped to leave Crystal Palace before the January window closes, with interest stretching across England and Europe.

Yet Forest’s sudden emergence has added a new layer of intrigue to an already crowded market. With the two clubs set to meet this weekend and the ghosts of past not fully buried, this could become one of the most controversial moves of all time.

Nottingham Forest to match Crystal Palace’s valuation as Mateta weighs up exit

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Nottingham Forest have made a £35million bid for Jean-Philippe Mateta, matching Crystal Palace’s valuation of the striker. The 28-year-old is understood to be open to a move away from south London.

Mateta has attracted significant attention in recent weeks. Juventus and AC Milan have both explored potential deals. Meanwhile, Aston Villa were also monitoring the situation before prioritising a move for Tammy Abraham.

Forest’s interest is described as ambitious but genuine. Currently sitting 17th, they view Mateta’s Premier League experience and goal output as a crucial upgrade. However, Palace are believed to remain firm on their valuation of around £40 million for Mateta.

Why a Jean-Philippe Mateta move to Forest would ignite tensions at Selhurst Park

A transfer from Crystal Palace to Nottingham Forest would be deeply contentious for Palace supporters. This is because of the bitter backdrop of last summer’s European dispute.

Crystal Palace had sealed Europa League qualification following their FA Cup triumph. However, it was overturned after Forest raised concerns with UEFA over multi-club ownership links.

As a result, Nottingham Forest snuck into Europa League, while Palace settled for the Conference League. The decision sparked protests, banners, and fines, and remains a sore point among the fanbase. Forest were seen as instrumental in triggering that process.

And, Mateta is nothing short of a legend in South London. He has endured a tough campaign but he was instrumental in helping the Eagles win the FA Cup in 2025 and the Community Shield. It would be difficult for Palace fans to see that BOOM celebration at the City Ground.
