For years, Joey Barton built a reputation as one of English football’s most controversial figures. Whether through fiery performances on the pitch or outspoken opinions off it, the former midfielder has rarely been far from headlines.
Now, Barton has found himself at the center of another serious controversy. Reports emerging from Merseyside claim the ex-Premier League player has been arrested.
Emergency services were called late Sunday evening after a man was reportedly attacked near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.

According to Merseyside Police, officers were called to the Fairway area of Huyton at around 9pm on Sunday. They received reports that a man had been assaulted near the golf club.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering injuries to his face and ribs. The victim was taken to hospital for further medical assessment.

Police confirmed that two men, aged 50 and 43, were arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding, a serious offense involving grievous bodily harm with intent. Both suspects remain in custody while detectives continue their investigation.
Local reports have identified the 43-year-old suspect as Joey Barton, who was born in nearby Huyton and played for Manchester City and Newcastle United.

During his career, Barton made 269 appearances in England’s top flight, including 130 for Manchester City. He later played for clubs such as Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, and Burnley before retiring from professional football.
Following his playing career, Barton moved into management, taking charge of League One side Bristol Rovers. He has been in the spotlight, facing trials for alleged assault on his wife, while also being given a suspended sentence at the backend of last year for his posts on X.
More recently, he has built a platform through his podcast Common Sense with Joey Barton, where he frequently discusses football, politics, and social issues. He has made headlines on his podcast, too, for some outlandish takes.
