Manchester United’s academy recruitment drive has struck again and this time, the club have secured a highly promising teenager whose journey has already taken more twists than most 13-year-olds could imagine.

After bouncing between trials at some of London’s biggest clubs, the youngster has now found his breakthrough moment in Manchester.

And while the name is unusual, the story behind it is even more eye-catching for the new Manchester United youngster.

Manchester United complete signing of 13-year-old defensive prospect Socrates

Manchester United have officially completed the signing of 13-year-old defender Socrates, a standout from the Elite London Academy (ELA), following an impressive trial period at Carrington.

According to The Sun, the young centre-back previously had trials with Arsenal, Tottenham, and Crystal Palace. But he has now committed to United’s academy setup and will join the club’s U14 squad later this season.

Socrates remains one of the most highly-rated players of his age group and this is considered as a major coup by United. The youngster will relocate from London after securing a place at an important Manchester school.

United will support both his football development and education pathway.

Who is Socrates, Manchester United’s latest academy recruit?

Originally a winger, Socrates was later converted into a centre-back, where his composure, athleticism, and ball-playing ability earned rave reviews.

Coaches at ELA have praised his adaptability, mentality, and rapid development, qualities that made him stand out during United’s assessment period.

In the official announcement shared by ELA, the teenager posed proudly in a Manchester United No. 10 shirt alongside two academy coaches. That’s a symbolic nod to how far he has come since grassroots level football.

The Elite London Academy, founded in 2018, is known for bridging the gap between community-level football and professional academies.

United will integrate him gradually into their environment. The focus will be on technical refinement, physical development, and tactical education. All essential steps for a modern centre-back.
