Michail Antonio expected a fresh start in Qatar. Instead, his move quickly turned into something far more unsettling.

Just days after joining Al Sailiya, the former West Ham striker found himself witnessing the outbreak of conflict from his hotel window. What should have been a routine debut became a night defined by fear.

Now, Antonio has opened up about the experience and the circumstances that pushed him out of the Premier League in the first place.

Michail Antonio on terrifying ‘war’ scenes around Qatar debut

Antonio’s move to Qatar came after a difficult period in his career, including a near-fatal car accident and an uncertain future at West Ham. However, nothing could have prepared him for what followed.

On the day he was set to make his debut, the situation escalated dramatically. “The day I was meant to make my debut, that was a frightening day,” Antonio told talkSPORT. “Hearing bombs and the hotel was shaking. That was terrifying.”

Looking out from his hotel, he witnessed the conflict firsthand. “I looked out the window and saw flames from the bombs flying,” he added. “That was the only day that was scary for me.”

Even after making his debut, a 70-minute appearance in a 4-0 defeat to Al Duhail, the sense of disruption continued. During a later match against Al Shahaniya, play stopped for 19 minutes as warning sirens rang across Doha.

The game was one of three fixtures halted that evening following a national emergency alert. Despite those incidents, Antonio has since reassured fans that the situation has stabilised. “I’ve not had the experience of anything crazy going on here. I’m safe here,” he said.

West Ham exit: Antonio points to Graham Potter’s squad overhaul

Beyond the events in Qatar, Antonio also reflected on his departure from West Ham, where he left as the club’s all-time Premier League top scorer. After scoring 83 goals in 323 appearances, the forward expected to remain a key figure.

Instead, he found himself part of a wider squad overhaul under then-manager Graham Potter. “I felt like it was mainly pushed by Graham Potter,” Antonio explained. “He was just trying to get rid of the old regime.”

According to Antonio, several senior players were moved on during that period, including Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal and Edson Alvarez, figures who had held significant influence in the dressing room.

The decision marked the end of an era at the London Stadium. Ironically, Potter himself did not last long, departing the club less than a year later.
