Tottenham are closing in on Roberto De Zerbi as their next head coach. The club sacked Igor Tudor, with the Croatian lasting just 44 days after Thomas Frank was dismissed earlier this season. Spurs now have seven games to save their Premier League status.

Despite his reservations about the timing, De Zerbi has edged closer to accepting the role. Crucially, assurances from the board over transfer backing appear to have shifted his position, with a five-year deal now on the table, only hours after dismissing Igor Tudor.

The move is not without controversy, however. A section of the Tottenham fanbase has already mobilised against the appointment, and it remains to be seen if he is the right man for a relegation scrap.

Tottenham table record package to land De Zerbi

Tottenham are pulling out all the stops to get their man. The proposed deal would make Roberto De Zerbi the highest-paid Premier League manager outside of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. This is a significant statement given the club’s current predicament.

The contract also includes a relegation release clause, protecting both parties if the worst happens. De Zerbi has been without a club since leaving Marseille in February. Initially, he preferred to hold out for a summer appointment rather than inherit a sinking ship mid-season.

Nevertheless, the scale of Spurs’ offer and their board’s promises over future investment have brought him to the brink of accepting, according to BBC Sport. There are few doubts over De Zerbi’s tactical acumen but doubts remain over his personality and ability to fight relegation.

Fan groups launch ‘No To De Zerbi’ campaign over Mason Greenwood stance

A growing off-pitch storm also threatens to overshadow the appointment entirely. On Friday night, several Spurs supporter groups launched a ‘No To De Zerbi’ campaign, citing his public defence of Mason Greenwood as their primary concern, as per BBC Sport.

De Zerbi signed Greenwood at Marseille following his departure from Manchester United. In November 2025, he described Greenwood as a “good guy” who paid a “heavy price”, remarks that drew widespread criticism for appearing to minimise serious domestic abuse allegations.

Women of the Lane and Proud Lilywhites both urged the club to reconsider. “Clubs signal their values through the decisions they make,” Women of the Lane stated. The footballing case for De Zerbi may be compelling but winning over a divided fanbase is a challenge altogether.
