Brighton put six past Barnsley in the League Cup third round, with Diego Gomez scoring a 33-minute hat-trick, before adding another.

17-year-old Harry Howell added their fifth before Yasin Ayari completed the route with a sixth.

It was a big win for Fabian Hurzeler’s men, who’ve scored six away from home in back-to-back League Cup matches, having hit Oxford United for six in the second round, too.

Diego Gomez’s screamer was the highlight of the night for Brighton

Brighton have truly mastered the art of signing an under-the-radar superstar. Diego Gomez opened his account for the Seagulls in the Premier League, by scoring a spectacular goal against Tottenham Hotspur in late May 2025.

And, the Paraguayan already improved on his tally from last season, scoring four times against Barnsley. To complete his hat-trick, Gomez struck a thunderous, first-time effort from over 30 yards.

That will definitely be among the favorites to win the goal of the tournament. But as good as that is, Gomez’s second goal of the night wasn’t too bad, either.

It was a magnificent finish to double Brighton’s lead, as Gomez scored from outside of the box with a lovely rising finish into the net.

Everton, Burnley exit League Cup while Chelsea, Fulham and Wrexham power through

While Brighton cruised through to the fourth round, Everton and Burnley exited the tournament after disappointing losses.

David Moyes came under criticism for picking a weak team, which was dispatched by Wolves in a 2-0 loss. Meanwhile, another Premier League side, Burnley were knocked out at home by Championship opposition, Cardiff City in a 2-1 defeat.

Chelsea had to dig deep and rely on Tyrique George’s heroics in the second half to scrape past League One outfit, Lincoln City, in a 2-1 win. Fulham also needed a second-half winner from Emile Smith-Rowe to knock Cambridge United out in a 1-0 win.

Manchester City, Newcastle United, and North London rivals, Arsenal and Tottenham, will all be in action in the League Cup later tonight as other qualified clubs await their fate with the draw scheduled for tonight, live on Sky Sports.
