Manchester United’s struggles have produced plenty of strange subplots in recent seasons, but few have taken on a life of their own quite like this one. What began as a fan-made challenge has slowly turned into a weekly talking point.

As Manchester United once again failed to build momentum on Tuesday night, attention drifted away from the pitch and back towards a familiar figure online. A draw that felt insignificant to some carried very real consequences for one supporter.

And now, one of the club’s greatest-ever players has finally snapped.

Wayne Rooney unloads as Frank Ilett’s haircut saga drags on following United’s draw

Wayne Rooney has made it clear he has had enough of Frank Ilett, the Manchester United superfan who has refused to cut his hair until the club win five games in a row. Asked whether he would be willing to take part in the long-awaited haircut, Rooney didn’t hesitate.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast alongside Sam Allardyce, the former United captain dismissed the idea entirely. “No,” Rooney said. “I’d put him on the other side of the country. He’s doing my head in.”

Rooney went further, venting frustration at how the story has overshadowed football itself.

He argued that conversations about Michael Carrick’s attempts to string wins together have been drowned out by talk of a fan’s haircut, adding that Illett would be “devastated” if United finally did win a fifth straight game because the attention would disappear.

“It’s doing my head in,” Rooney repeated. “That’s where football and social media is heading. A guy getting his haircut if Man United win a game of football.”

Frank Ilett’s viral stunt brings uncomfortable spotlight to everyone involved

Ilett’s wait continues after United’s 1-1 draw with West Ham, a result that extended his no-haircut run to 493 days.

Tomas Soucek’s second-half opener looked set to keep the saga alive before Benjamin Sesko’s stoppage-time equaliser ensured the clippers stayed away once again.

Known online as The United Strand, Ilett has amassed over 1.4 million Instagram followers as fans track his ever-growing barnet and United’s inconsistent form. Even former players like Gerard Pique have joined in, while Carrick’s winning run briefly raised hopes the end was near.

Not everyone is amused. While some fans backed Rooney’s blunt assessment, others defended Ilett, pointing out that the Oxford-born supporter plans to donate his hair to The Little Princess Trust and has already raised around £6,000 for the charity.

Illett has also endured abuse. This includes an incident at Old Trafford earlier this season where another fan pulled his hair. With United’s current run meaning the earliest possible 5-game streak falls on March 20, the saga is set to drag on, and potentially into another summer.
