‘A lack of respect’: Antony breaks silence on shock mistreatment at Manchester United
Last Updated on 8 October 2025
Ruben Amorim’s iron-fist summer saw a number of high-profile departures from Manchester United. That list included the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony.
Most Manchester United’s wantaway players have found a new spark since leaving Old Trafford, with Hojlund and Rashford impressing in the Champions League for their new clubs.
On the other hand, ironically, Ruben Amorim and Manchester United are off to a terrible start to the 2025/26 campaign.
Antony enjoyed a high-spirited end to the 2024-25 season on loan at Real Betis and then completed a permanent move in the summer.
‘No one even said good morning’ Antony lifts the lid Manchester United exile
Antony told ESPN Brazil that his final months in Manchester were among the toughest of his career. The winger described being left out of training sessions and isolated from the rest of the squad as he awaited his move.
“There was a bit of a lack of respect there, even a bit of rudeness too,” he said. “Not even a good morning or good afternoon. But that’s in the past.”
Antony added, “That’s in the past, I won’t give much importance to these things. Now I’m here, at Betis, I’m living here, that’s the most important thing for me.”

The £85m signing accepted that he was not at his best during his time at Old Trafford and took responsibility of the nightmare three years at Manchester United.
“I think off-field matters affected me a lot, in my performance. I know my potential, I know my qualities, I didn’t play in a World Cup for nothing, I didn’t return to the national team for nothing and I also take responsibility for it not working out, for not performing as I wanted.”
Real Betis give Antony a chance to start over new
A move to La Liga has seen a dramatic upturn in form for Brazilian winger Antony. His revitalized performances for Real Betis stand in stark contrast to his struggles at Manchester United.
During the entire 2023/24 season with Manchester United, Antony managed a modest return of just 3 goals and 2 assists in 38 appearances across all competitions.
This frustrating period was followed by a continued lean spell in the first half of the 2024/25 campaign, where he found the net only once in 14 matches for the Red Devils.
| Season | Club | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023/24 | Manchester United | 38 | 3 | 2 |
| First Half of 2024/25 | Manchester United | 14 | 1 | 0 |
| Second Half of 2024/25 | Real Betis | 26 | 9 | 5 |
However, a mid-season loan move to Real Betis in January 2025 proved to be the catalyst for a remarkable transformation.
In the remainder of the 2024/25 season, Antony flourished in the Spanish top flight, racking up an impressive 9 goals and 5 assists for Los Verdiblancos.
This output in just a few months surpassed his entire goal and assist tally from the previous one and a half seasons at Old Trafford. He already has a goal and assist to his name in the 2025/26 season for Real Betis and he will hope to hit the highs that turned him into superstar at Ajax.
