Deadline Day madness: Arsenal interested in Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali
Last Updated on 2 February 2026
The January transfer window has served up a few interesting sagas. And, for what it’s worth, the Premier League might just come up with another one.
After Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City made their move by grabbing Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo, the league leaders are set to make their own.
According to reports in Germany and England, Arsenal are exploring a late deadline day move for Newcastle United midfielder, Sandro Tonali.
Arsenal exploring a late move for Sandro Tonali
Sky Germany exclusively revealed on Monday morning that Arsenal were ‘exploring’ a deal for Sandro Tonali on deadline day.
This comes after an injury to Mikel Merino, who is expected to miss a significant chunk of the 2025/26 campaign. Tonali has been one of the standout pillars of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United and it seems unlikely that the Geordies let him walk.
The first approach from Arsenal has been knocked back by Newcastle. But, apparently, Arsenal remain firm in their interest and could make a fresh approach. It is considered a ‘difficult’ deal to do but the Gunners are expected to try to close it by tonight.
Newcastle correspondents, on the other hand, remain adamant there is no chance of Tonali leaving in this window.
Is Sandro Tonali the final piece to Arsenal’s push for a historic season?
Arsenal have by far the best squad in Europe, right now. Manchester City’s draw to Tottenham Hotspur, puts the Gunners six points clear in the league.
They also won all eight of their group stage clashes in the Champions League and lead Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. As their search for a Premier League trophy goes on, Mikel Arteta will hope to win more than just a league title.
And, a player like Sandro Tonali only makes them stronger. The 25-year-old Italian gives them a lot of stability in midfield. Only question is, can they get a deal for him over the line?
