Mikel Arteta heads into the 2025/26 season with expectation, not patience.

After three consecutive second-place finishes and a transfer spend exceeding £1 billion, Arsenal are no longer building; they’re expected to win.

Arsenal’s summer spending spree

This summer alone, the Gunners have spent around £270 million, directly addressing the gaps that cost them in previous campaigns.

  • Viktor Gyokeres – one of Europe’s most prolific strikers, finally gives Arsenal the reliable centre-forward they lacked.
  • Eberechi Eze – the £60m arrival from Crystal Palace brings flair, creativity, and unpredictability in tight matches.
  • Martin Zubimendi – adds control and composure in midfield, already impressing at Old Trafford in pre-season.
  • Noni Madueke – signed from Chelsea, brings pace and direct attacking threat on the wings.
  • Christian Norgaard – offers leadership and defensive cover in deeper areas.

With Gyokeres and Eze, Arsenal may finally have the attacking balance to unlock stubborn defences.

Arsenal’s spending may continue as they target Piero Hincapie

Despite the hefty spending, it appears that Arteta’s spending is going to continue as they are now linked with yet another Tottenham target Piero Hincapie.

As per latest reports, Arsenal are in advanced stage of their pursuit to sign the defender with the player keen on signing for the Gunners as well.

Signing him would take their spending to over £300m this summer.

Martin Keown says Mikel Arteta needs to win this season

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has also stated that Arteta needs to deliver a silverware now more than ever.

He praised the progress the team has made under him, however, pointed out that just one trophy in six years is not good enough. Speaking to talkSPORT, he said:

“I think they [Arsenal] need to win trophies. You know, not to win trophies since 2020…Manchester United still managed to win more trophies than Arsenal since both those two great managers [Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger] have gone.

“One trophy for [Mikel] Arteta is not enough. He needs to put some trophies in the cabinet. So, that is an overriding factor; he has to become a winner now.”

Can Arsenal finally end their 21-Year title drought?

Arteta has been backed more than any Arsenal manager in history. With a squad boasting depth, variety, and match-winners across the pitch, this season represents his biggest opportunity to deliver.

Failure to win the Premier League or Champions League would raise serious questions — success, however, would cement his place in Arsenal history.

Arteta has been handed the tools in quality and variety to finally break Arsenal’s 21-year title drought.
