2026 World Cup
Cristiano Ronaldo mired in controversy as Portuguese legend gets away with suspended ban
Last Updated on 26 November 2025
Few stories heading into next summer’s World Cup carry more intrigue than the one surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo.
Still one of football’s biggest global icons, Cristiano Ronaldo found himself at the centre of a storm after a moment of violent conduct during qualifying for the World Cup 2026.
Yet the outcome has left fans and pundits questioning how the decision was reached.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s ruled out for only one-match ban after sanction suspended
Sent off for elbowing Republic of Ireland’s Dara O’Shea during Portugal’s 2–0 defeat, Cristiano deserved a three-game ban.
However, according to BBC, FIFA’s disciplinary committee has reduced the effective punishment to just one match, suspending the remaining two games for a year.

As per the official statement, the ruling takes into account Cristiano’s conduct over his last 226 international appearances. It is the first incident of such nature and based on that, FIFA ruled it as a significant factor to soften the sanction.
The 40-year-old has already served his one-match ban in Portugal’s 9-1 win over Armenia. This makes him fully available for the 2026 World Cup in America.
That said, FIFA warned the Portgueuse star that a similar offence within the next 12 months would immediately activate the remaining two-game suspension.
Why this Cristiano Ronaldo decision is different from normal protocol
Suspended bans are not unheard of in FIFA’s rulebook, but examples are rare, and almost none involve violent conduct by a player of Ronaldo’s stature.
Meanwhile, the timing has only added fuel to the controversy. Ronaldo recently attended a White House dinner alongside U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The trio were photographed smiling and posing for selfies.
As a result, the optics have led some to question whether Ronaldo’s global influence played a role in the outcome. It’s difficult to imagine this dispensation being given to any other player in world football.
