Five bold predictions that could shape the Premier League in 2026
Last Updated on 1 January 2026
The Premier League rarely shifts overnight. Power changes hands slowly, dynasties crack before they collapse, and trends reveal themselves months before the table confirms them.
But 2026 feels different. Contracts are expiring, projects are straining, and several of the league’s biggest institutions are approaching genuine crossroads.
Here are five bold predictions that could redefine the Premier League landscape over the next 12 months.
5) Enzo Maresca’s exit sends Chelsea into chaos
Despite lifting the Club World Cup in 2025, cracks between Enzo Maresca and Chelsea’s hierarchy widened. Results dipped, messaging fractured, and the “long-term project” began to feel increasingly fragile with the Italian leaving Chelsea on the 1st of January.
The prediction: Maresca’s resignation following a breakdown in trust with the board leads to Chelsea spiralling through the second half of the season under interim leadership. They eventually finish 6th or 7th and miss out on Champions League qualification entirely.
4) The Ruben Amorim experiment runs out of road
Ruben Amorim arrived at Old Trafford with a clear identity, but the Premier League is unforgiving to rigid systems. His 3-4-3 demands precision, athletic wing-backs and defensive cohesion, all areas United have struggled to sustain.
The prediction: After a deeply uneven 2025/26 season, Amorim is dismissed by June 2026. United return to square one once again, reinforcing the idea that tactical philosophy alone cannot fix structural decay. And, the cycle starts all over again.
3) The top six glass ceiling finally shatters – permanently
The “Big Six” is already wobbling. Tactical clarity at Villa and financial muscle at Newcastle have narrowed the gap faster than most expected. Tottenham snuck into the Champions League after winning the Europa League but their luck could run out this season.
The prediction: In 2026, another non-traditional club finishes ahead of three Big Six sides, proving Champions League qualification is no longer a closed shop. The table recalibrates permanently, given Newcastle’s spending power and the revolution at Villa Park.
2) Arsenal finally shed the “nearly men” label
For several seasons, Arsenal have been close enough to touch the trophy, yet just short of lifting it. By 2026, that excuse disappears. Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Martin Ødegaard will all be entering their physical and tactical prime.
The prediction: Arsenal fall short of the 2025/26 Premier League title but win the Champions League and establish themselves as winners. From there, Mikel Arteta’s men finally turn their attentions to the Premier League for the 2026/27 campaign.
1) The Pep Guardiola era ends with another Premier League title
For nearly a decade, City have been football’s gold standard. But with Pep Guardiola’s contract timeline tightening and the shadow of the 115 charges still unresolved, the sense of an approaching conclusion is impossible to ignore.
The prediction: Guardiola walks away in summer 2026 regardless of the final verdict but with another Premier League trophy to his and City’s name. The immediate aftermath creates a power vacuum City struggle to fill, and despite being champions they look vulnerable.
