Former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has opened up about his shock move to the UAE’s Second Division League, revealing it had nothing to do with money.

Instead, it has everything to do with finding peace of mind. The 32-year-old, who once played in front of packed Premier League stadiums, is now turning out for Arabian Falcons in front of just a few dozen spectators.

Jonjo Shelvey didn’t mince his words when discussing life in the UK. While grateful for his career, the midfielder said that life in England no longer feels safe or comfortable for him and his family.

“You can’t wear a watch in London anymore. You can’t have your phone out,” Shelvey said to BBC, reflecting on his concerns about crime and safety in his hometown.

Having spent years living comfortably in Newcastle, Shelvey uprooted his young family and moved to the United Arab Emirates signing for the Arabian Falcons.

The former Liverpool midfielder truly believes Dubai offers a calmer environment where his family can enjoy a better quality of life.
