Paul Scholes pulls no punches ripping into Michael Carrick after Man Utd’s first 2026 defeat

The Red Devils’ near-perfect start to 2026 came crashing down at St. James’ Park. A dramatic late winner from Newcastle handed Michael Carrick his first defeat as United manager.
William Osula’s goal in the 90th minute led to a meltdown for Manchester United, off-the-pitch, with a former legend not holding back in his critique.
Paul Scholes made it clear he was far from impressed with what he had seen by United.
Paul Scholes unloads after Michael Carrick’s first setback at United
Manchester United expected another win after their recent run of form especially after Newcastle United were reduced to 10 men just before half-time. Jacob Ramsey was shown a controversial second yellow card by referee Peter Bankes for what was judged to be simulation.
As a result, Eddie Howe’s side faced the entire second half a man down yet the script refused to follow the expected path. Anthony Gordon put Newcastle ahead before Casemiro nodded home Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick to level the game just before the break.
United looked poised to push on for victory only to be stunned late on when William Osula cut inside and curled home a dramatic winner to seal a remarkable 2–1 win for the Magpies.
The result clearly didn’t sit well with Paul Scholes who took to Instagram to blow off some steam. In a now deleted story, the United legend delivered a cutting remark aimed at Carrick.

“Michael has definitely got something special about him… cos Utd have been c*** last four games… night.” Scholes wrote, offering a brutally blunt assessment of United’s recent performances.
Scholes not fully sold on Michael Carrick; Wants Carlo Ancelotti
Michael Carrick has made an excellent start as Manchester United manager, guiding the club up to third place in the Premier League. It marks a superb turnaround, especially considering how poor United looked under Ruben Amorim just months ago.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Paul Scholes pointed to another name he believes would be better suited for the job.
“He is the perfect one out there: I say perfect, Ancelotti is still out there. I know he is the coach of Brazil. He is the perfect one for Manchester United; you think he will make players feel a million dollars.”
Carrick has been unable to convince the Class of ’92, so far in his tenure. Roy Keane already expressed doubts about the appointment earlier, and now Scholes has added his voice to the criticism. Meanwhile, Roberto Martinez has emerged as a strong contender for the job, too.
As far as Scholes is concerned, even a strong league finish would not automatically prove Carrick is the right long-term choice. “The question is, has Michael got the experience? Can we see Michael winning the Premier League? I don’t know yet.”
