Roy Keane has launched a fresh, bizarre swipe at Michael Carrick’s wife, Lisa, reigniting a bitter feud that has laid dormant for over a decade.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, the Manchester United legend did not hold back when discussing Carrick’s recent appointment as interim manager at Old Trafford.

While dissecting the state of the club following Ruben Amorim’s sacking, Keane took a direct shot at Lisa Carrick, referencing a deleted tweet from 2014 that evidently still rankles the former captain.

What did Roy Keane say about Michael Carrick’s wife?

During a heated discussion on the podcast regarding the new coaching setup at Manchester United, Keane made a pointed remark about the influence of the new interim manager’s spouse.

As the panel, including Gary Neville, Ian Wright, and Jamie Carragher, discussed Carrick’s return to the dugout, Keane quipped:

“His wife can always come in [if Carrick doesn’t do well], ’cause she’s got a bit of a big mouth sometimes. She’s probably doing the team talk.”

The comment left his co-hosts stunned, with Ian Wright laughing in disbelief.

While the panel attempted to move the conversation back to football, Keane’s refusal to let the grudge go shows the deep-seated tension remaining from their 2014 public spat.

The 2014 Incident: What Happened Between Roy Keane and Lisa Carrick?

To understand Keane’s recent outburst, you have to look back to February 2014, following Manchester United’s dismal 2-0 Champions League defeat to Olympiacos.

Keane, working as a pundit for ITV at the time, was scathing in his assessment of Michael Carrick’s post-match interview. He described Carrick’s demeanor as “flat” and lacking the urgency required of a senior United player during a crisis.

Lisa Carrick immediately took to Twitter to defend her husband, posting a furious message that quickly went viral:

**”Roy Keane what a **, says anything to provoke a reaction. That’s all done.”

Realising the severity of the language, she deleted the tweet shortly after and issued an apology, stating: “Deleted my tweet… Emotions got the better of me… just disappointed.”

Despite the apology and the passage of 12 years, Keane’s comments in 2026 prove he has neither forgotten nor forgiven the public insult.

Keane not happy with Michael Carrick’s backroom staff appointment

Keane’s frustration on the podcast wasn’t solely directed at Lisa Carrick; it was part of a broader critique of the “jobs for the boys” culture he perceives at Manchester United.

Beyond the personal jibes, Keane was visibly agitated by the makeup of Michael Carrick’s new backroom staff, specifically the appointment of Jonny Evans as a first-team coach.

Keane questioned the logic of Evans, who had left his role as loans manager just weeks prior, being immediately elevated to a senior coaching position by technical director Darren Fletcher and Carrick.

He argued that these appointments felt like friends hiring friends rather than a strategic move to fix the club’s deep-rooted issues.

Who is Michael Carrick’s Wife?

Lisa Carrick (formerly Lisa Roughead) is a pilates instructor and the long-term partner of the Manchester United interim manager.

  • Profession: Business owner and Pilates instructor.
  • Relationship: The couple began dating as teenagers while they were both at school.
  • Family: They married in June 2007 and have two children together, a daughter named Louise and a son named Jacey.

While she generally keeps a low profile compared to other “WAGs,” her passionate defence of her husband in 2014 remains one of the few times she has publicly entered the footballing discourse, a moment Roy Keane clearly ensures remains part of the narrative.
