A former Arsenal midfielder stepped onto the pitch against Tottenham Hotspur in a controversial return to North London.

Having left Arsenal on contract expiry, Thomas Partey put pen to paper on a one-year contract with Spanish side, Villarreal.

Less than 24 hours after playing in a Champions League game, he appeared in front of the judge in light of some serious charges.

Thomas Partey pleads not guilty as case sends shockwaves

12 minutes from full-time, Villarreal boss, Marcelino brought Thomas Partey on, as the Yellow Submarine chased an equaliser.

Partey had been allegedly involved in a harassment case during his time in the Premier League with Arsenal.

However, Mikel Arteta defended the player and wanted to keep him at the club but some disagreement over new terms led to his departure, as per The Guardian.

As a result, Partey joined Villarreal and made his return to North London in a 1-0 win for Tottenham Hotspur.

Only few hours later, though, Partey appeared at Southwark Crown Court for his plea hearing. He denied the alleged offences with his trial starting on 2nd November 2026, according to the BBC.

The only reason he could turn out for Villarreal with the on-going investigation was the nature of his bail. It does not prevent him from playing football but he must inform police about international travel, at least 24 hours in advance.

Tottenham fans greet Thomas Partey with raucous boos

Fans did not hold back, booing Partey, due to his affiliation with rivals Arsenal, and because of the list of alleged offences looming over his head.

Much like the reception in North London, more than 1000 Villarreal fans signed a petition protesting his signing.
