It was meant to be a confidence boost. A goal off the bench, momentum finally building, and signs of a forward beginning to settle into life at a new club. Instead, it ended with visible pain, medical staff rushing on, and Alexander Isak going off.

Initially, there were rumours of an ACL injury, but Liverpool confirmed the injury to Isak on Wednesday and it’s still not a pretty reading for their fans.

Having endured a tough start to life at Anfield, Alexander Isak is set to miss an extended time period for his new club.

Alexander Isak sidelined for months after surgery on fractured fibula

Alexander Isak has undergone surgery after sustaining a fracture in his left leg, Liverpool have confirmed.

The 26-year-old striker suffered an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture during Liverpool’s win over Tottenham on Saturday.

Isak had come off the bench to give Arne Slot’s side a lead in the second half. However, he was injured in the process, following a dangerous challenge from Micky van de Ven immediately after getting his shot away.

Isak was unable to continue and had to be helped from the pitch in visible discomfort. Liverpool have confirmed he has since successfully undergone surgery. While there is no official timescale on his return, the Swede is expected to be sidelined for a “few months” at least.

The injury is a major setback for Isak. He joined Liverpool in the summer for a Premier League record £125m. Since arriving from Newcastle in September, Isak has scored three goals in 16 appearances, struggling to build rhythm amid fitness issues.

Liverpool facing tough decisions ahead of January transfer window with depth concerns

Alexander Isak’s injury has only worsened the depth concerns for Arne Slot and Liverpool. Mohamed Salah is set to miss at least three weeks of action due to AFCON. Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo is already nursing an injury.

Federico Chiesa is not favoured by the Dutchman with the 28-year-old starting two games in all competitions, this season. That leaves 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha and Hugo Ekitike as natural attacking options ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Wolves on Saturday.

This could force Richard Hughes’ hand in January with Antoine Semenyo being reliably linked with the Reds. The Bournemouth winger has been heavily in-demand with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United weighing up a move. Liverpool could also recall Harvey Elliott, who has fallen out of favour at Aston Villa under Unai Emery.
