Former Arsenal & Liverpool goalkeeper Alex Manninger died at the age of 48 following a tragic accident in Austria. Police confirmed the incident occurred around 08:20 local time near Salzburg, when Manninger’s car was struck by a train at a level crossing.
Emergency services attempted to resuscitate him after freeing him from the vehicle, but he could not be saved.
The former shot-stopper enjoyed a long career across Europe, representing clubs including Arsenal and Liverpool, and earning more than 30 caps for the Austrian national team.

Authorities in Austria confirmed that Manninger was alone in his vehicle when the collision occurred, as per BBC. Police said first responders used a defibrillator after pulling him from the wreckage, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The train driver was unharmed.
The news prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the football world. Clubs he represented and figures within Austrian football paid respect to a goalkeeper widely admired for his professionalism and calm presence.
Austrian Football Association sporting director Peter Schottel described Manninger as an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football. “His professionalism, composure and reliability made him an integral part of his teams and the national team,” Schottel said.
Arsenal also released a statement expressing shock at the news. “Everyone at Arsenal is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic passing of former goalkeeper Alex Manninger,” the club wrote, offering condolences to his family and loved ones.

Alex Manninger built a respected career across Europe after beginning his professional journey with hometown club Red Bull Salzburg. He joined Arsenal in 1997 and made 64 appearances during a five-year spell in North London.
Although often serving as backup to England goalkeeper David Seaman, Manninger played a crucial role late in the 1997-98 season, stepping in during Seaman’s injury absence. That campaign proved memorable.
Manninger helped Arsenal defeat West Ham on penalties in the FA Cup and impressed in a big win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. His performances even earned him a Player of the Month award for March 1998, and was got a Premier League winner’s medal with Arsenal.
After leaving Arsenal, Manninger enjoyed a long journey across European football. He played for clubs including Udinese, AC Siena and Juventus, and even deputising for Gianluigi Buffon.
He later signed a short-term deal with Liverpool in 2016 at the age of 39. While he did not make a competitive appearance, it was his last club. Manninger also made over 30 appearances for Austria, being a part of the home team that hosted the 2008 Euro.
