Liverpool’s historic first Merseyside Derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium ended in breathless, nerve-shredding fashion with a 90th-minute Virgil van Dijk header snatching a 2-1 win for Arne Slot’s side.

But Liverpool’s crucial three points in the Premier League came at a cost. Twice the stretcher was called onto Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium turf.

It left a shadow over what should have been a moment of pure celebration for the red half of Merseyside.

Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jarrard Branthwaite both injured in concern-filled Merseyside Derby

The Hill Dickinson Stadium’s Merseyside Derby debut was always going to be special. However, no one expected it to be marked by two injury stoppages sucking the air out of the ground.

Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, was forced off in what looked a serious blow, right after Everton equalized. The Georgian stopper was already deputising for Alisson, who has been out of action for a few weeks. He was replaced by Freddie Woodman in the second half.

Everton, meanwhile, lost Jarrad Branthwaite, one of David Moyes’ most important defenders. The centre-back had been marshalling Everton’s backline with characteristic composure. However, he was taken off on a stretcher to a concerned hush around the stadium.

Liverpool’s medical staff will have their hands full with another one of their new recruits suffering a serious injury. It helps the evening was not a total loss as they won, opening up a seven-point gap in fifth, as per Premier League’s official website.

The match itself was a fittingly feisty, end-to-end affair for a rivalry that needs no added spice. Liverpool drew first blood in the 29th minute through Mohamed Salah, in his last Merseyside Derby, after a superb pass from Cody Gakpo.

Everton pegged their city rivals back, less than 10 minutes after half-time, with Beto scoring the equalizer. Beto unintentionally caught Mamardashvilli in the follow-through, leading to the Georgian’s injury.

The second half proved to be an even more end-to-end affair with both sides going for the win. Then came the 90th minute. Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner was flung in at pace and Virgil Van Dijk rose above Everton’s defence to slam home a 100th minute winner.

It was a result that maintained Liverpool’s push for a Champions League spot. They move seven points clear in fifth, and stay within touching distance of Aston Villa and Manchester United. For Everton, it was a gut-punch at their new home on derby day.
