Tuchel pulls the trigger: England’s brutal World Cup 2026 cuts and the global snubs that followed
Last Updated on 21 May 2026
Thomas Tuchel has always been clear: he collects team players, not talent collectors. However, his ruthless England selections have still sent shockwaves across football.
Some huge names have been cut from the final 26-man roster. Yet England are far from alone in making divisive calls. Moreover, across the globe, coaches are leaving elite players at home in favour of cohesion and form.
So, who are the biggest names watching World Cup 2026 from their sofa?
Thomas Tuchel comes up with brutal England calls
Thomas Tuchel has ended the era of starstruck coaches who automatically pick big names. Under his watch, reputations count for nothing: performances do. Consequently, some of England’s most decorated players have paid the price.
Harry Maguire confirmed his omission, writing: “I’ve been left shocked and gutted.” The centre-back has 66 caps. Nevertheless, Tuchel has moved on without him, prioritising a younger, dynamic backline. At 33, this omission could mark the end of his England career.
Phil Foden also missed out, despite Tuchel previously acknowledging that he “tried everything.” The manager admitted: “He was excellent in camp but he struggles to show it on the pitch.” Similarly, Cole Palmer, Chelsea’s creative fulcrum for much of the season, is out.
Levi Colwill and Lewis Hall were also among those cut by Tuchel. Perhaps the most contentious call, though, involves Morgan Gibbs-White. The Nottingham Forest star scored 17 goals this season and stood out as one of the most in-form players, yet Tuchel cut him.
Meanwhile, Luke Shaw and Trent Alexander-Arnold also failed to make the cut. Alexander-Arnold’s high-profile summer switch to Real Madrid never translated into an England recall, with Reece James firmly cementing himself as first choice under the German.
The global snubs shaking the world of football ahead of World Cup 2026
Joao Pedro has been a revelation at Chelsea, recording 15 goals and five assists in the Premier League alone. Despite that, Carlo Ancelotti left him out of Brazil’s squad, even apologizing to the striker, as per Goal. Richarlison, too, missed out.
Despite starting the season strongly at Tottenham, his inconsistent fitness and patchy performances ultimately cost him his place in a squad that also featured Neymar.
In France, Eduardo Camavinga was the headline omission from Didier Deschamps’ squad. He misses out along with Kolo Muani. He came within inches of winning France the 2022 World Cup final, his stoppage-time shot brilliantly saved by Emiliano Martinez.
Belgium also made tough calls. Lois Openda missed out and the impressive young winger Malick Fofana also failed to make the cut. For Germany, Marc Andre ter Stegen misses out as Manuel Neuer took back his retirement. As well as, Karim Adeyemi and Kevin Schade.
