Nearly five years after a chaotic night on the Greek island of Mykonos, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has again been found guilty in court. But the latest ruling has slightly changed the outcome.

The England international was handed a 15-month suspended sentence following a retrial connected to a nightclub altercation in 2020. The decision comes after years of legal delays and an appeal that wiped out his original conviction.

While Harry Maguire maintains his innocence and plans to fight the verdict further, the case has once again dragged the Manchester United defender’s controversial holiday incident back into the spotlight.

Retrial in Greece reduces Harry Maguire’s sentence after years of legal delays

The case dates back to August 2020. Harry Maguire was arrested on the Greek island of Mykonos after a late-night altercation outside a nightclub. The Manchester United defender was detained alongside his brother Joe Maguire and friend Christopher Sharman.

It was due to an alleged incident involving Maguire’s sister Daisy. Reportedly, Daisy fainted after interacting with two men. Maguire claimed he believed his group were being kidnapped when three men in plain clothes approached and forced them off a minibus they had ordered.

Authorities accused Maguire of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery, allegations he has consistently denied. He was originally convicted in 2020 and given a 21-month suspended sentence, but immediately appealed.

Under Greek law, that appeal nullified the verdict and triggered a full retrial. After several postponements, the retrial took place in Syros on March 4, where the court issued a reduced 15-month suspended sentence, as per MEN.

What the verdict means for Harry Maguire’s career and next legal step

Because the sentence is suspended, Maguire will not serve prison time unless he commits another offense during the suspension period. The ruling also means he is legally free to continue his career with Manchester United and remain available for England selection.

However, the case is not finished. Maguire and his legal team intend to appeal the conviction to Greece’s Supreme Court, as the defender continues to insist he did nothing wrong during the incident.

There is also a time limit on the case. The statute of limitations expires in August 2028, meaning the legal process must conclude before then. For now, though, the verdict is unlikely to result in any disciplinary action from club or country.
