5 Premier League players that split opinions – Prepare for the debate heat!
Last Updated on 25 November 2025
Few things spark football arguments faster than a player everyone seems to rate differently. In every fanbase there are those figures who divide the room: world-class or overrated? Crucial or replaceable? Misunderstood genius or walking chaos?
The Premier League is full of those lightning-rod players, the ones who inspire essays of praise and rants of frustration, sometimes in the same match.
From flair merchants to inconsistent superstars, here are five players who split opinions like no one else right now.
5 – Jack Grealish (Everton – On loan from Manchester City)
Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish never split opinions. He was rated by everyone and was so good that Pep Guardiola splashed a nine-figure sum on him without a second thought.

Unfortunately, ever since his move to the Etihad, Grealish has not been able to hit the heights everyone expected him to. That said, he was a major player in City’s treble-winning run and came up with crucial goals during his time in Manchester.
However, there’s a reason why a 29-year-old ÂŁ100 million player was loaned out by City, in the summer. Grealish’s recent form has been mediocre and while he has impressed in patches at Everton, he’s not quite what he was at Villa Park.
4 – Harry Maguire (Manchester United)
Unlike Jack Grealish’s move to Manchester City, A LOT of eyebrows were raised when Manchester United broke the bank for Harry Maguire.
Maguire was signed for a world record fee for a defender at ÂŁ80 million in 2019, as per Sky. It’s fair to say that the 32-year-old has not quite lived up to that transfer fee.
Still, he has put in some world-class performances. He has also scored some big goals and his aerial presence in both boxes is second to few other players. But, Maguire continues to split opinions, not just in the fanbase, but also among managers.
United have had four managers since Maguire came to Old Trafford. Maybe that is the problem, the instability. But, the English international has failed to make a mark for either manager, including Ruben Amorim.
3 – Ibrahima Konate (Liverpool)
For someone who put in superb performances in a World Cup final and a Champions League final, Ibrahima Konate gets a lot of flak from fans.
After a mediocre start to the 2025/26 campaign, Liverpool fans have been tearing into Konate. A lot of that has to do with his current contract situation and interest from Real Madrid. However, the Frenchman has not done himself any favors with poor defensive displays.
The 26-year-old also does not pass the eye-test without controversy. On some days, he looks like a wall. Other times, he comes across unbelievably fragile and prone to making major mistakes.
2 – Phil Foden (Manchester City)
Similar to Konate and Maguire, Phil Foden continues to split opinions outside of the fanbases, as well. Even pundits can’t quite agree on just how good the 25-year-old really is.

Foden was instrumental during the 2023/24 campaign for Manchester City, scoring 19 goals in the Premier League and assisting 8 goals for the champions.
But, his inconsistency has been a huge talking point. Foden failed to build on that form during the Euros 2024. He also could not seize the moment in 2024/25 season with Manchester City falling off the cliff.
And, at this point, his place in England’s squad is also under scrutiny.
1 – Kai Havertz (Arsenal)
Easily, the most controversial player in the Premier League, Kai Havertz is a mystery, to say the least.
A young prodigy who became a superstar in the Bundesliga, Havertz moved to Chelsea in a big money move. Despite scoring the winner against Manchester City in the Champions League final for Chelsea, Havertz was eventually sold to Arsenal.
For what it’s worth, the German does not score as consistently as you would want from your number 9. Then again, other tacticians and Arsenal fans argue that Havertz is not a traditional nine. He is more of a nine and a half, who facilitates attacks more than finishing them.
