Liverpool handed major Ibrahima Konate boost amidst chaotic week at Anfield
Last Updated on 9 April 2026
Liverpool are closing in on a significant piece of positive news amid one of the most turbulent weeks in recent memory at Anfield. They were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City, and lost 2-0 to PSG in the Champions League.
After Mohamed Salah’s announcement to leave the club, Andy Robertson has also confirmed his exit. Meanwhile, defender Ibrahima Konate is out of contract at the end of the season, and his future has been the subject of considerable uncertainty in recent months.
But according to Fabrizio Romano, that situation is now moving in Liverpool’s favour, and a resolution could be closer than many expected.
Ibrahima Konate close to new Liverpool contract
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool are confident of agreeing a new contract with the Ibrahima Konate. He described negotiations as advancing well between the two parties and a formal agreement is expected soon.
Real Madrid had previously registered an interest in the French international. But the Spanish club have since informed the player they will not be pursuing a move, as per Goal.com.
Konate had looked increasingly likely to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, which would have been a damaging blow for a side that has already struggled defensively this campaign. Keeping him beyond the summer now represents a genuine coup for Arne Slot.
Centre-back depth offers Liverpool rare cause for optimism heading into next season
While uncertainty clouds large parts of Liverpool’s summer planning, their central defensive outlook is shaping up as a relative bright spot.
Van Dijk remains an ever-present and commanding force at the back. And now with Konate now set to commit his future, Slot retains a formidable first-choice pairing. Beyond that, the depth looks encouraging too, highly-rated youngster Jeremy Jacquet has already been signed.
Meanwhile, Leoni is expected to return from injury in the near future, adding further cover. Liverpool face significant upheaval in attack and out wide, so it’s good to see them retaining some of the spine. However, it still doesn’t change the fact that upcoming summer will be big.
Especially with Robertson and Salah both announcing their departures at the end of the season. It’s also possible Liverpool lose more players with Curtis Jones and Federico Chiesa falling out of favour. Even, Alisson is rumoured to be interested in a move back to Italy.
