Leaving through the front door: How Steven Gerrard helped Mohamed Salah choose the exit he deserved
Last Updated on 1 May 2026
There are moments in football that never make the back pages. Quiet conversations in living rooms, over a dinner table, away from the cameras. Yet, they decide the fate of clubs and re-write footballing history.
Mohamed Salah has now pulled the curtain back on one of those moments. He revealed that Steven Gerrard came to his home in January for a private dinner at a time when Salah’s Liverpool future had never looked more uncertain.
What they said that evening, and how Salah responded to it, may have shaped not just a transfer window but a legacy.
The dinner that steadied Arne Slot’s Anfield ship – and kept Liverpool’s season alive
January was arguably the most turbulent month of Arne Slot’s Liverpool tenure. After Liverpool benched him for three games, Salah publicly claimed the club had ‘thrown him under the bus.’ He also said he no longer had a relationship with his manager.
All this sent shockwaves through the Premier League and sparked genuine speculation about a January exit. With Saudi clubs circling and Salah set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, the idea of him not returning was far from unthinkable. Into that moment stepped Gerrard.
In his TNT Sports interview, Salah revealed that the Liverpool legend made the trip to his home.”I think people didn’t know that you came to my house. I hope it was a good dinner! We had a good conversation, and you said your opinion, and I think I really, really appreciate it.”
The significance of Gerrard’s intervention is hard to overstate. Gerrard had already publicly urged Salah to “reverse away” from his comments and handle the situation directly with his manager. However, taking that message to Salah’s door made it something far more personal.
Gerrard spoke from experience. He had navigated his own emotional outbursts as a player. He had watched Luis Suarez clash badly with Brendan Rodgers. As a result, he knew how quickly a great player’s final chapter could be written for them, rather than by them.
For Liverpool, keeping Salah through the winter ultimately proved critical. He helped steady the ship for Arne Slot, opening up an eight-point gap to sixth and he’s not done yet. Salah plans to return before the end of the season to put the finishing touches to a glittering career.
“I’m glad I’m leaving from a big door”, Mohamed Salah on exit and a plea for Henderson
Salah is now at peace with how his story ends. Reflecting on Gerrard’s words in the interview, he said: “Yeah, I’m glad that I’m leaving now from a big door, and I think this is also something you mentioned to me, just leaving on your terms, and I still remember those words.”
His final appearance at Anfield will likely come on the last day of the Premier League season, when Liverpool face Brentford on May 24. He will get a send-off befitting a player of his stature but Salah used the moment to call for another man to be honoured: Jordan Henderson.
A player who captained Liverpool for over 12 years but left without the farewell he deserved because he departed so abruptly.
“Without him, we wouldn’t have achieved what we achieved. I really hope that the fans will give him a good send-off,” said Salah. One final day at Anfield. Two farewells long overdue.
