Liverpool emerge as frontrunners in race for Adam Wharton
Last Updated on 26 January 2026
Liverpool’s long-term recruitment plans may already be taking shape, with fresh reports suggesting Adam Wharton is edging closer to a potential move to Anfield.
The highly-rated midfielder has been on the radar of several Premier League clubs, but momentum now appears to be building in one direction.
While no deal is imminent, the latest update hints at groundwork being laid behind the scenes. Apparently, Liverpool are once again looking to move early rather than get dragged into a bidding war later down the line.
Liverpool move ahead of rivals as Adam Wharton signals willingness to join
According to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, Adam Wharton is now “closer” to completing a move to Liverpool. If the report is true, it places the Reds firmly at the front of the queue for his signature.
Despite attracting widespread Premier League interest, Liverpool are reportedly the club making the most concrete progress. Schira claims that Wharton has already made contact with Liverpool and has given his availability to sign a five-year contract.
Currently contracted to Crystal Palace, the England international is viewed as one of the most promising young midfielders in the domestic game. Wharton’s profile fits the club’s preference for technically gifted and tactically intelligent players.
Apparently, Liverpool have been monitoring midfield options closely. However, Wharton’s name now appears to be moving from scouting lists to serious internal discussions.
What does Adam Wharton bring to Liverpool’s midfield?
If the move materialises, Adam Wharton would offer Liverpool a blend of control and bite that has often been missing from their midfield balance. Still only 21, Wharton has already built a reputation as a deep-lying organiser and has been praised by the likes of Pep Guardiola.
He is comfortable setting the tempo with one or two touches. And, he is also aggressive enough to disrupt opponents before transitions even begin. Tactically, his profile suits Arne Slot’s demands and potentially Xabi Alonso’s, as well, should the Spaniard replace Slot.
Wharton is also extremely press-resistant. Composed in tight spaces and intelligent in his positioning, he often draws pressure before breaking lines. Defensively, he relies on anticipation rather than brute force, ranking high for ball recoveries and interceptions.
Crucially, his left-footedness would add natural balance to a midfield dominated by right-footed options, allowing Liverpool’s more attacking players to operate higher up the pitch with greater security behind them.
