Major Arne Slot warning as Liverpool title-winning coach returns…but joins Tottenham
Last Updated on 15 January 2026
Arne Slot arrived at Anfield with a reputation for control, clarity and cool-headed authority. But as Liverpool’s 2025/26 campaign begins to drift, that calm has been replaced by a growing sense of tension around the Dutchman.
Results and performances simply haven’t matched the standards expected on Merseyside, and patience is wearing thin. Liverpool now find themselves 14 points behind leaders Arsenal, a gap that has turned every fixture into a crisis.
With the title pretty much gone, questions are starting to shift from what’s going wrong to who carries the blame. And a decision made in North London, speaks volumes on how secure Slot really is…
John Heitinga returns to Premier League with Tottenham; Ominous signs for Arne Slot
John Heitinga is back in the Premier League, but not where many expected. After leaving his role as Liverpool’s first-team coach to take charge at Ajax, the Dutchman has now resurfaced in England with Tottenham, joining Thomas Frank’s staff as a first-team coach.
For Liverpool fans, it’s an eyebrow-raising development that inevitably feeds into the growing noise around Arne Slot. Heitinga was widely credited internally as a key voice during last season’s title run.
It has been consistently reported that players responded strongly to his methods and presence on the training ground. As a result, the timing is what makes it feel significant. Why would Heitinga not be the number one option for a return to Anfield given the current turmoil?
Clearly, the hierarchy wants to go in a different position in the summer. That would be more in line with Liverpool’s decision to keep the powder dry in January, too. Moreover, there has been reported trouble between Slot and Richard Hughes, as reported earlier in January.
Xabi Alonso among candidates to potentially replace Arne Slot in Anfield dug-out
If Liverpool do decide they need a reset in the summer, Xabi Alonso’s name is only going to get louder. The former Reds midfielder is suddenly back on the market after his recent departure from Real Madrid, with Alvaro Arbeloa stepping in as an interim replacement at the Bernabeu.

And despite the sting of being moved on in Madrid, Alonso’s camp are understood to be confident that his reputation remains intact. They believe another elite job will be within reach.
After all, this is still a coach with an obvious “top-club” profile, built on his rapid rise and the sense that his ideas travel well at the highest level. Other managers like Julian Nagelsmann have also been strongly linked to Liverpool.
Ultimately, despite the club being tight-lipped on the issue, it’s obvious that pressure is rising on Arne Slot. He will need a miracle to turn his career around at Liverpool and time is running out.
