The Champions League returned with its third gameweek and there were plenty of goals and shock results on Tuesday.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal had too much for Atletico Madrid on the night, as they hit them for four to remain perfect in the Champions League.

This marks Arsenal’s sixth consecutive win in all competitions with the Gunners in fine form to start the 2025/26 campaign.

Viktor Gyokeres on target twice as Arsenal put four past Atletico Madrid

The first half hardly saw much action even though Arsenal dominated possession and attack.

It was not until the 57th minute that Arteta’s men broke the deadlock, once again, with a set play, showcasing their prowess.

Gabriel Magalhaes headed in Declan Rice’s freekick before Gabriel Martinelli doubled the lead with a neat finish after great work from youngster, Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Three minutes after Martinelli’s goal, Gyokeres also scored for the first time in the Champions League for Arsenal. And he only needed three more minutes to make it four-nil, grabbing his second on the night after a lovely finish from outside the penalty area.

It’s true Atletico have not been at the races this season. But it is still a statement win for Arsenal as they made Diego Simeone’s men look far weaker than they actually are.

Goal fest in the Champions League on Tuesday – staggering 43 goals across 9 games

Arsenal’s massive win over Atletico in the Champions League was not the only shock result on the night.

The two early kick-offs saw Barcelona make light work of Olympiacos in a 6-1 win and a rare 0-0 draw between Kairat Almaty and Pafos.

As for the remaining seven games, they were packed with huge scorelines. Newcastle United comfortably beat Jose Mourinho’s Benfica 3-0 at St James Park. In Spain, Manchester City won 2-0 in Villarreal with no prizes for guessing who was on the scoresheet.

Dortmund and Inter, both won their away fixtures by scoring four against Copenhagen and Union Saint-Gilloise respectively. Even though, Dortmund shipped two themselves.

The real drama on the night, though, was in Eindhoven and Leverkusen. PSV hosted the Italian champions, Napoli, and won 6-2 after Lorenzo Lucca was sent off in the second half.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen were destroyed by the defending champions, PSG with both sides going down to ten. Despite a brace from Bayer’s Aleix Garcia, PSG had too much for the German side, scoring seven times.
