The Premier League is built on drama, tension, and fine margins, but every so often, those margins completely disappear. On rare, brutal occasions, one team doesn’t just win… they obliterate.

These are the days when records are shredded. Confidence is crushed. And goalkeepers are left wishing the final whistle would arrive early.

These are the biggest margins of victory in Premier League history, matches where domination turned into demolition.

5. Tottenham Hotspur 9–1 Wigan Athletic (November 2009)

Unbelievably, this Spurs v Wigan game was actually only 1-0 at half-time with Peter Crouch opening the scoring for the home side.

The second half, however, yielded nine goals, including a seven minute hat-trick from Jermain Defoe, who scored five times in one half.

Wigan actually pulled one back in the midst of Defoe’s quickfire hattrick but Spurs took that personally. Defoe would score three more after Wigan’s equalizer, meanwhile, Niko Kranjcar, Aaron Lennon and David Bentley all joined the party with a goal apiece.

4. Southampton 0-9 Leicester City (October 2019)

Ben Chilwell scored from a difficult angle to open the scoring for the Foxes in the opening 10 minutes of the game.

But then, Ryan Bertrand was sent off only two minutes later and all hell broke loose at St. Mary’s.

Youri Tielemans and Ayoze Perez scored in quick succession and Leicester were 3-0 up inside 20 minutes. Six minutes before half-time, Perez scored another and Jamie Vardy got in on the action, as well, to make it 5-0 to the away side.

Unfortunately for the Saints, it only got worse in the second half. Perez got his hattrick, so did Vardy, while James Maddison scored one, too. It remains the biggest away win in Premier League history, as per Squawka.

3. Manchester United 9-0 Southampton (February 2021)

They say lightning doesn’t strike twice, but for Southampton and Ralph Hasenhuttl, that could not be further away from the truth.

Less than 15 months after losing 9-0 at home to Leicester, Southampton lost by the same scoreline to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Again, their undoing ended up being a red card, this time to Alexandre Jankewitz in the second minute of the game. United took full advantage, scoring four times in the first half through Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edison Cavani and a Jan Bednarek own goal.

Yet, the second half was worse. Martial and Scott McTominay made it 6 before Bednarek was sent off in the 86th minute. And then the 9-men Saints were hit for three more to make it 9-0 in a humiliating display.

2. Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth (August 2022)

The most recent 9-0 win came at Anfield for Liverpool against Bournemouth in August 2022.

Coming into this one, Liverpool had made their worst start to the season under Jurgen Klopp. But they put it right, in style.

Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott opened the scoring for Liverpool, putting the Reds two-nil up in six minutes. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino made it 4-0 with goals coming around the half-hour mark.

Just before the half-time whistle, Virgil van Dijk made it 5, as Chris Mepham put the ball in his own net for Liverpool’s sixth. Firmino and Diaz got their second, while Fabio Carvalho got one late on for a historic win at Anfield.

1. Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town (March 1995)

The first ever 9-0 win in the Premier League also came at Old Trafford when Manchester United steamrolled Ipswich Town. For more than two decades, this was the benchmark. And, even now, it has only been equalled, not beat.

In front of the then-highest-recorded attendance, United put on a show.

Andy Cole scored five times for the Red Devils, while Mark Hughes got a brace, too. Roy Keane and Paul Ince added one goal each as Ipswich were humbled after a fantastic first season back in the league.
