The war of words surrounding Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool has intensified, with former teammate Dejan Lovren stepping in to defend the Egyptian winger following blistering criticism from Jamie Carragher.

Tensions at Anfield have reached a boiling point after Salah’s explosive post-match interview following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds United.

The forward, who was named on the bench for the third consecutive game, claimed he felt he had been “thrown under the bus” by the club and revealed his relationship with manager Arne Slot had effectively broken down.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher did not hold back in his assessment of the situation. Speaking on Monday Night Football, the Liverpool legend labelled Salah’s comments a “disgrace,” accusing the 33-year-old of “choreographing” the outburst with his agent to cause maximum damage to the club’s hierarchy during a difficult run of form.

Following Liverpool’s victory on Saturday, where Salah assisted Hugo Ekitike to reach 277 Premier League goal contributions (188 goals, 89 assists) for the Reds, the Egyptian winger posted a graphic celebrating the historic milestone.

Lovren, who has been Salah’s most vocal defender throughout the recent contract saga, reposted the achievement on X (formerly Twitter) with a caption dripping in sarcasm:

“Not good enough Mo. You need to cover your full back.”

The comment is a thinly veiled swipe at Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher. In his recent Monday Night Football rant, Carragher had labelled Salah “selfish” and “a disgrace” for his post-match comments, often citing the winger’s perceived lack of defensive work rate and tracking back as a stick to beat him with.

By highlighting Salah’s incredible attacking output, which now statistically eclipses every legend to have played for a single Premier League club, including Rooney, Thierry Henry, and Harry Kane, Lovren is mocking the idea that defensive duties should be the primary focus for a player delivering such historic numbers.

This is not the first time he has defended his friend. Lovren has been aggressively defending Salah on social media the entire week.

Salah silences critics with historic milestone

While the off-pitch drama continues between former teammates and pundits, Salah’s response on the pitch has been emphatic.

His assist against Brighton moved him past Wayne Rooney’s long-standing record of 276 goal involvements for Manchester United, cementing his status as the most productive player for a single club in the competition’s history.

The record is particularly poignant given the week’s events. After being dropped from the Champions League squad by manager Arne Slot and subjected to intense media scrutiny, Salah returned to the fold to do exactly what he has done for eight years: create goals.

The “cover your full back” narrative has long been used by critics to downplay Salah’s influence when he isn’t scoring.

However, Lovren’s tweet highlights the absurdity of criticising the defensive work of a forward who has just become the most effective attacker in the history of the Premier League for a single team.
